Don't blame just the TSA on this one, it's obvious the mom was being a powerstruck a$$hat.

BTW, did anyone check out the video of the attempted robbery in the pizza chop. The owner takes a pizza knife to the guy over and over, then drags him out smearing blood across the floor. ewwwww.......

How is this a TSA issue, it's a stupid mom issue. TSA does lots of stupid things, but this isn't a good example.

I agree with how ridiculous this came out looking but the minute you let "common sense" decide who should go and who needs to be scrutanized further, you have terrorists dressing up like mom trying to get home with a kid.

They put the video on their website, the mom is just being a b!tch. She throws the cup on the ground herself and gets aggresive when they ask her to clean it up.

She could have been more cooperative but really, snatching the cup from a tot and then threating her
with arrest is somewhat overkill. Couldn't that time be spent more carefully screening bags or something?
how much common sense does it take to realize the tot was not toting combustible fluid?? and 7 officers
to deal with this??

This falls on both shoulders equally. The TSA webpage states that "sippy cups" are allowed, she offered to drink from the cup.

The biggest casualty from September 11th was the loss of common sense.

Any idea how many firemen show up to a tiny incident down the street ? They go to where the action is.

When you click on the video link on the MSNBC page, the video launcher will pop up. Scroll down to the other videos. It's the second on the left.

In the case of a fire you don't really know what you dealing with until you get there so
I can understand that but a sippy cup? How did that sound on the radio " code 5 cup
violation, gate 7 need backup stat!!!"

TSA is clearely in the right here. It's quite obvious that a "victim" is in the process of gathering as much free publicity as she can in preparation for an imminent lawsuit.

All the "victim" wanted was to get herself and a 19 month old on a plane. If you or I
were humiliated like that and missed a flight because of it you would be pi$$ed too.
Besides, how many people were half a$$ed screened while SEVEN agents responded??

Butch, exactly what was TSA supposed to do differently here? Are arguing she wasn't a threat because she's a woman or she had a child? Two planes down in Russia from Chechnean women prove that theory false...

All they had to do was have her take a sip of the water, a 10 second delay, issue closed,
agents back to screening activity's .

And that would prove what? It doesnt prove the liquid isn't dangerous, it doesn't prove their wasnt another bag inside the cup with something worse (both far fetched, but your making it seem simple like such a simple case). The facts as reported initially sounded bad, but the Washington Post has a more tempered view:

Emmerson is seen being escorted out of the security checkpoint area by a screener. It then appears that she intentionally dumps water out of the sippy cup onto the floor and tries to slip back through security without going through the screening process, drawing the attention of a police officer.

She talks to the officer as she digs around in her son's stroller, apparently for her identification. The officer's supervisor arrives, and then Emmerson's fiance appears. Within a few minutes, Emmerson is on her hands and knees, drying up the puddle with a handful of paper towels. A TSA screener nearby makes sure nobody slips on the water and takes Emmerson's wet paper towels.

In the incident report, a TSA officer wrote that before Emmerson was escorted out of the checkpoint area, she flashed her "Secret Service badge and credentials and said she should be exempt from all this and this was a stupid policy."

See that bolded part. That's actually what caused all of this (well that and her intentionally dumping the water on the floor).

I think the TSA does some incredibly stupid things. That said, this woman shouldn't be the poster child for anti-tsa rants.

If you want a REALLY stupid example of airport security all you have to do is look here.

2 professionals, both of whom should have known better, acting badly. TSA guy pulls the terrorist card out and the woman counters with the "think of the children" card. A pox on both of them.

It was a sippy cup with freaking water, why would they not let her open the damn thing up and drink the water and be done with the assinine 'no liquids' rule.

No, what she wanted to do was to get around clearely posted and well-publicized rules that apply to everybody, except for her apparently. She broke those rules TWICE. First, when she tried to sneack past security, then when she argued with the agent and intentially spilled the water. Why is it so hard to understand? Not to mention that as soon as she's boarded she and her baby could drink all the water she wanted.

If anything, TSA should be commended for being vigilant and performing their duties as required.

This is a case of a self-important bitch getting called on her attempt to circumvent the system and then publicizing the favorable version of her story. The announcer on MSNBC bought that version hook line and sinker and used it as a platform for a misinformed rant about the stupidity of the system.

And people wonder why the news is not considered to have any integrity anymore...
