With my brother's "NEW 3DS XL," I finally started to play Zelda: Link Between Worlds. As a spiritual sequel to the 1991 game, I expect I'm the target audience for this game. So why does it do this annoying crap?
Right at the start, there's the annoying rail-roading. I'm forced to follow a character because Link is late for work or something. I wanted to explore a little...but NO. I can't stray one direction or another because the camera pans over to some annoying kid who I'm forced to follow. Couldn't the game simply let me explore? The characters could simply complain when I eventually get there ("What took you so long?!"). I guess the game designers chose the option that removes the most fun / freedom.
Later, I'm in the first dungeon. I defeat a character that doesn't really seem like a boss. It doesn't give me a heart container or send me out of the dungeon. Instead, it gives me the ability to turn into a two-dimensional wall drawing so I can explore the dungeon in a whole new way. After briefly exploring a new area of the dungeon, I find a familiar part of the dungeon (near the entrance). You know: I'm DEFINITELY going to re-explore this dungeon with this new ability to see what I missed, but I'm right near the entrance and there's a save point just outside. It would be smart to step outside the dungeon and save really quick, then finish exploring the dungeon with my new ability. Instead, I step outside and there's forced dialog with an NPC, which forcibly transports me halfway across the game world (back to Link's house). I'm ready to save and quit outside Link's house, but I decide to step inside for some reason. The annoying rabbit-eared kid immediately talks to you forcibly with a completely unimportant greeting that requires wasted seconds and camera movements when all I want to do is step back out (Was that really necessary? WHY can't the game let ME walk up to the character and talk?). I step back out and THERE'S ANOTHER FORCED SEQUENCE. Also seems pointless. Camera pans down and left to some kid character calling out and walks off the screen. Several more seconds wasted. Then I finally get to save.
My memory doesn't work very well. I hope I remember to trek all the way back east and re-explore the dungeon I was forcibly transported away from.
@#$%@#$@!!!
