Single vs Dual Channel memory

I'm building a pretty low (as cheap as possible) system. The MoBo is a micro ATX that has 2 memory slots and supports dual channel memory. It appears that I can install 1 stick of memory (obviously without the dual channel access) or 2 sticks. I am debating which I should do for a 2GB system. If I go with 1 stick, I can upgrade later without throwing away the first stick. How much of a difference does dual channel access provide? This is a general purpose non gaming system with an AMD Sempron that will run Windows XP for now.

For non-gaming purposes, single channel will suffice. I'd rather put the 2GB single stick in now and add another later than replace a set of 2x1GB sticks entirely.

A single 2gb stick is best IMO.

For a Sempron running XP, don't even worry about the question of single vs. dual.
It's not worth your time.

One more open lane, obviously dual faster.. if that is what you wanted to know. Now they have triple channel and soon with the launch of Intels new mobo and CPU we will have quad channel ..memory,,,,, thx,,

On a 785G mobo, running 3dMark01 with integrated graphics, the difference between dual-channel and single channel, was 10,500 for dual, and 10,000 for single. Not a whole lot of difference.
