Single People w/pets

Hey all,
So I'm thinking of getting a dog or a cat in the somewhat near future... probably after I move. I work the normal 8-5 type of job. I don't really want a rabbit or hamster type of animal that's always in a cage.

So what do you do for your pets while you're not home? Do they just entertain themselves? This is aside from leaving out water and food. I've always assume that cats are more independent and don't need as much attention + they sleep a lot. Whereas dogs are much more active (depending on the breed and such).
The last thing that I'd want to do is put 'em in a cage or lock 'em in a room...

thoughts & suggestions?

I have a cat for those reasons. It's even more important when you travel, just get someone to feed water and maybe change the poop box. No need for walks or kennels.

my wife and I adpoted an older cat (7yrs). We have no problems leaving him home 8 hrs a day since hes beyond his kitten destroying years.

I would not get a dog if I was in your shoes.

I would suggest getting a cat. A dog will do fine, as my gf and I are out for that amount of time. But if you get a dog it will have to be an older dog. You can't get a puppy because it will require more attention than you have time for.

Oh and yeah my dog just chills and entertains himself when he's at home. I really don't know what he does but he doesn't do anything bad.

Absolutely right. I got a puppy in May specifically because I am in college right now so I have the time to devote to training her correctly. There is no way a puppy would last 8 hours without either destroying your house or pooping/pissing all over itself in a cage. Cats, fish or a decently trained older dog (>1.5 years or so) should work for you.

i have a tarantula

the crickets i feed it can be damn loud at night, though :/

otherwise, if you want something indoors, id go for a cat....or a lizard 😉

With my cats, I leave a few mouse toys out, since they occasionally will knock them around on their own. I leave the blinds open because they like looking out the window all day. On warm days, while I'm there, I'll leave the window up (though the screen closed so they can't get out) because they really really like being able to smell "outside" as well. Just make sure you leave food and water out (usually 1/4 of a cup in the morning, 1/4 at night for each cat) and empty the litter box before you go so they're not having to deal with last night's waste.

I got my dog last year. I'm not single....so it does help with the walking, etc... I didn't get a puppy. I got a dog that was at least a year or two old... The first 5 minutes he was in the house he pooped 7 times in the living room. Since then, only outside.

I got pretty scared...after that first incident, but he's been really good. No messes in the house and he doesn't chew anything unless I give him toys. Best part is that he's cute. I'm married, but if I weren't....I could pick up chicks sooo easy with this dog. You simply cannot pick up chicks with a cat.

Here's a sideways picture of us. 😛

An 8~5 job works fine with a dog, but if you get a puppy you will have to go home at lunch for the first few months and take him out.

My dog sleeps all day in his cage whether I lock him in or not so I usually put him in b/c sometimes he gets into stuff. When he was little I kept him in the kitchen using a baby gate so he didn't have to sit in his own pee or poo in the cage. But he loves his cage, it is his own space.

You just have to stick to certain breeds if the dog will be in the house most of the day. I have a weiner dog (thanks to an Ex girlfriend) and it sounds gay but the wimmenz love my 10lb weiner

A cat will get you no love at the park

We have dogs and cats. We removed the bottom section of a storm door to turn it into a sort of doggy door (our dogs are too big for the doggy doors that were available in stores.) They come and go as they please. A portion of the yard is fenced in.

A tarantula or a lizard is more of a decoration than a pet.

Get a dog that will be fun at the park...chick magnets...crate training a smarter breed dog will be easy. My Aussie took just a couple of days to completely crate train as they do not like sleeping where they pee and poop. Now he comes and goes as he pleases and can catch frizbees like nobodies business.

Here's my Doggie collection

Definitely don't get a dog. Dogs require a lot of care, and more than that, they require attention. They do just fine with an 8 to 5 job, but they can't easily be left alone for a weekend.

Cats are self-entertaining*. They need and enjoy human contact, but it's no big deal to leave cats overnight or for a weekend if you put down extra bowls of food and water.

My vote is for cats. Get a pair...a single cat has requirements similar to a dog with regards to human contact, but if you have more than one they'll entertain themselves. They'll still be a little wiggy if you leave them by themselves overnight, but they have each other to hang out with so it's not really traumatic. Two cats aren't really any more work than one, aside from cleaning the litter box twice as often.

*As long as there are more than one

..Chihuahuas. I got two of em. all the sensitivity of a big dog without the big dog problems. ( they think they're big dogs)

Some cats are. One of the guys in the apartment here got a kitten, and it would howl pitifully nonstop if it was left alone for more than 20 minutes. It was a petstore kitten, so it was probably used to there always being activity, or someone around for company.

My cats were from a farm, and they do just fine when left alone. They'll check around the house for anyone, and if they don't find anyone, then they just sleep somewhere that we usually spend time. The one cat always liked being in my computer room. If I'd open the door to let him in, he'd make a beeline toward my chair. He'd turn his ears around to listen to where I was, and if I was close, he'd hurry up to get there before me. 🙂
If I wasn't home, that's usually where he'd sleep.

This also depends on the cats. My cats tolerated each other, and that's as far as it went. Things got worse as they got older - Scotty had a stroke, and then he'd get seizures, which apparently changed something about him that Beverly didn't like. She freaked out like there was a new cat in the house. She avoided him, and hissed at him if he'd so much as look at her.

Before them, we had Harry. He was quite a smart cat*, and he was also just fine on his own. He was also very tolerant. He was around when I was little, and I'd pick him up by slinging him over my shoulder. He'd just hang there, and deal with it. The other funny thing was when my parents adopted a small kitten that must have been abandoned. They named her Rosy.

Each day around 5pm, we give our cats a portion of wet canned cat food. They have dry food available 24/7, but they love the canned stuff. Anyway, at supper, Harry would wait until Rosy was done eating, and then he'd take care of the leftovers. And, we don't let the cats on the dinner table. One time, Rosy decided to explore the table. Harry lept up, grabbed her by the scruff of the neck, jumped down, and let her go. That was her lesson on not going onto the table.

Moral of the story: Cats have different personalities, and will react differently to being left alone. Some will follow you around like a puppy, some will just accept that you happen to inhabit the same room that they're in. Some will get nervous and anxious if you're away because they miss you, some will get anxious because they're hoping you won't come back. 🙂
