single GPU/lower res VS double GPU/higher res

Now, I am sure the title may be a little misleading; however I wasn't sure exactly how to word this dilemma I have been having.

I recently put together a nice rig. Purchased everything new, from the new keyboard/mouse to the motherboard. Nothing was salvaged from my old rig except for my 4:3 ratio 19inch LCD monitor. Specifically I have 2x8800gts's, 2gigs of ram, and a e6600 which I will be o/c'ing. Now, the reason I purchased 2 video cards instead of one was because I wanted to purchase a 24inch LCD monitor which has a native resolution of 1920x1200. From the benchmarks I looked through, having two of these cards would have a noticeable advantage at these resolutions.

Now, the problem is I just realized that there are a bunch of variables I never considered. If I purchase a monitor with such a high native resolution, I will always be taxed for it. A higher resolution means less frames and it essentially locks me into always buying two video cards for keeping up with the demand. So, now I am beginning to think... I use this rig for gaming mostly, while everything else is secondary. Doesn't this mean I should probably stick with a smaller monitor with a lower native resolution (like 1280xwhatever) and just stick with a single fast running GPU system in mind?

I would really appreciate some input from people who are gamers and who have ever had experience with the two "models" of gaming systems (single GPU/lower res VS double GPU/higher res). Bare in mind, I purchased these parts less then 2 weeks ago; so if anything I can always RMA the cards.

Thank you!

I have a 24inch display and a single 7800gtx, worked fine for fear/half life 2 ... at 1900x1200, I am probably going to upgrade this summer but even with a 24inch you dont need sli/crossfire, you can get good performance with a single high end (or step below high end (ie 8800gts 640 or 2900xt)) its the 30inch 2500x1600 displays that "need" sli/crossfire for good performance.

I run an eVGA 8800GTX which is good enough to run Oblivion @ 1920x1200 with all eye-candy turned on.

Newer graphics cards should do even better than my 8800, so I think you have very little to worry about ... other than purchasing a newer/better card sometime in the future.
