Single core processing

I run an FX-55 that I am hoping to get over 3ghz with my new motherboard and hsf, but I wonder how much life a single core like this has in it.

This cpu overclocked is equal to about 1/2 of a stock X2 6000, and C2D 6400 maybe? Running XP, doing little multitasking, and playing Hellgate and Titan Quest I haven't noticed any reason to need 2 or more cores.

So factually, how much does XP ultilize multiple cores? Vista?

Do all new release games utilize multiple cores? Some? When will they all do so?

Etc etc, to when will running a single core cpu actually be a huge bottleneck as opposed to the multiple cores now just being a bonus in computing power?

You were saying? IIRC, didn't Quake 4 come out in 2005? Notice how the slowest dual-core ever made is faster than an FX-57? Any more questions?

If you haven't already purchased a new motherboard/hsf for that FX, don't. Just join the C2D revolution already.

See, toms charts are useful and all for someone who is buying a new setup and would like to see differences between two chips in an ideal setup. Could also give a rough idea how much an upgrade would ideally benefit someone. But I don't play quake 4, and if I did then what does it tell me? My stock chip does 100 (fps?) and a Q6600 does 176. If that is fps, it tells me that an upgrade is pointless if I want to play Quake 4 because I doubt I can tell the difference between 100 fps and anything over that. Does it tell me if Quake 4 is multi-threaded? No, I can make that assumption or assume that a single core on the Q6600 performs quite a lot better than my single core.

It tells me the best chip they have ever tested does a virus scan 17 seconds faster than mine. etc etc

Does it tell me if Vista + apps run like crap on a single core? no. Does it tell me how widespread the adoption of multi-threaded designing in games is? no. etc etc

Everything one these forums is a lie, the FX-55 is the best processor out there right now and will remain the top contender for the next century. Every benchmark proving that dual core CPUs are faster have been made up, there is no proof that multi-threading is the future.
