Single Core Ok for File Server?

Have an old 2.4GHz AM2 lying around and I'm trying to scrap together a file server. Would this be sufficient enough?

It depends on how many computers would be accessing it at once, but I think 2.4GHz would work as a file server for a few computers. I have a 2.4GHz computer that would work fine for that purpose.
 
More then enough. Your first bottleneck will be the connection speed of your network (1000 mbits / sec most likely) The next will be your hard drive. After that your CPU might come into play.
 
Thats what I was thinking. It will really only be supporting a maximum of 3 computers, 1000mbit connection and I'm going to get the 32mb cache barracudas in raid 5.

I think people really over estimate the CPU on fileservers. I had a Dual PIII 933 file server and it ran fine connected through gbit fiber optic lan to a 48 port switch. With as many as 30-35 people pulling files from it, it barely even blinked. For just a plain file server, most people can get away with A LOT less than they think.
 
I have been using a celeron 2.8g as a file server and it runs just fine, was thinking about getting a e2180 or something just for the sake of less heat. For some reason, that prescott can be really hot sometime.
