Single 150gb raptor running out of space

I'm running a single wd 150gb raptor, and I'm constantly installing and uninstalling my games from it to save space. I feel claustrophobic now and am considering an upgrade. Would I get better performance by getting another raptor and raiding them, or am I just better off getting a 1tb drive and calling it good?

And I can't find the exact same model number of my raptor on newegg, I have the 1500adfd, and all i see on the egg is the 1500hlfs. Could I still raid them together?

If you don't mind taking a tiny hit to performance (very minimal) then a WD "Black" drive in 640GB or 1TB sizes might be good. Alternately a Samsung F1 in the same sizes.

If you want capacity AND increased performance, consider a VelociRaptor 300GB. This week Best Buy is selling them for $199 with no rebates. Then, sell off your old 150GB Raptor and recoup some of the cost.

150GB is not enough for the games you are playing right now and your OS? are you installing heavy programs like adobe creative suit on it? are you putting a bunch of downloaded video and junk on it?
It is really hard to advise because we have no idea what kind of data you have, what preferences you have, how much money you have, etc etc etc.

I like to keep at least 50 gigs free (ideally i'd like 50% free, everything feels faster for some reason), I have about 50 gigs of games that are either played at a lan I frequently attend or my gf plays, so that leaves about 40 for the OS and games I personally enjoy. It's been workable but my space requirements are going up with time and may very well reach the tipping point soon.

... so wait, you are not deleting because you are out of room, you are deleting because you WANT 50GB of free space?

Do you have a secondary drive? you can always mix the velociraptor with a WD640GB Black.

50GB free space on the Raptor is a little much, but not too far off the 20% free target.

hard drive speed is much faster when the drive is not filling up. the outer rim of the drive is where data is transferred the fastest, and as it fills up, it writes inward to the slowest region.

sounds like what you need is a better all-around drive for performance, and possibly some storage. one of those WD640GB that taltamir mentioned would suit you well

Maybe get a Samsung F1 1tb now, which will be almost as fast as your raptor, to use as your maind drive, to later be relegated to storage duty when faster, bigger, cheaper SSDs are on the market later in the year?

Seems a good suggestion would be to get a new HD to use as your OS drive, then use your existing Raptor for your game installs. That way your games launch fast, load levels fast, etc. and your OS is *acceptably* fast (any of the new HD models will be fast enough).

Oh man. Thank god I read that. I was about to buy the 74gb from NewEgg. Just 2 days after picking up a EEE PC 1000H, I'll be back there to drop more cash.
