Singing ability: Born with or learned?

Well, for one thing I can't sing at all. But I believe it is both born with and also taught by through vocal techniques and such... More like 70% born with, 30% taught though. Because otherwise, you have people who can't truly sing, but try to do so regardless(*cough*AshleeSimpson*cough*..) Heh. 🙂

yea i dont care either and it really doesnt matter, plenty of artists are rich and famous and cant sing for sh!t

As with most anything, you can develop what you've got, but there is going to be a limit to your natural abilities that you will reach disirregardless of the amount of practicing/training you invest.

That said, the real key is your ear. If you can't perceive the difference between one tone and another, you are pretty much screwed. If you can, then you can sing...maybe not well, but you can sing.

It's like everything else. A certain number of people just naturally excel at it from the start, most others can be taught to do it well through practice and discipline, and some just can't do it no matter how hard they try.

Yes, that is correct! 😉

I have perfect pitch, but Lord knows that it took me a long time to get from point A to point B. My Mom was basically a task master when it came to my playing the piano - an hour of practice every weekday, without fail - no to mention piano lessons and what-not. My ability to learn music and sing did not come naturally.

its gotta be both. no one can be good without working. some people work hard at it, but cant get to the level of others. same with any skill.

Basically true.

But anyone can be taught to sing well. They just need to be taught correct pitch and tempo. It is very hard to teach someone to sing great unless they are born with it.

I used to have a very powerful singing voice, ever since I was young. But I have some vocal nodes now from overuse. Can't hit certain pitches without falsetto anymore. 🙁

Some people can learn to hit the right notes and stay in tune and all that but that's not all it takes. No matter how well you can sing in tune, if the tonal quality of your voice resembles say. . .Gollum's. . .you probably won't be a very popular singer.

and that goes back to a previous example... your voice can resemble Gollum, but you can be a popular singer: ashlee simpson. of course, connections had a lot to do with it.

You just need to understand how to control the tone of your voice. Voices that don't have clarity can also be used in certain styles.

not really. there are some people who just genetically cannot understand music. its rare but it shows its not just something everyone can be taught. meh it was on one of those documetaries about the mind.. i forget what it was called. http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/full/125/2/238

if u naturally can't sing, u'll never be good. if you're naturally talented, then there's space for improvement to become awesome
