Since when were domain registrations instantaneous?

I just registered a domain, and it went into effect immediately. I seem to remember it taking a day or to for the root servers to get the info...what happened?

Which domain registrar?

Is it a standard parked "coming soon" page -or- can you actually updated it real time?

Depends where you are. You think people in Asia would see it as soon as you do ?

I used godaddy....it may have been something like 10 minutes, but no more. I honestly couldn't believe it...neither could any of my buddies. I thought maybe they changed things?

Well it really depends on how quickly the transaction is processed and how quickly the DNS servers around the world update. Some ISPs have better DNS than others whereas it updates quicker...that could explain it, but Godaddy still did a quick transaction...

Registration is instantaneous, DNS propagation is what takes time. You can often resolve from the SOA for the domain fairly instantaneously but the far reaches of the internet won't update for up to a couple days.

To get quick DNS propagation you would just have to figure out the times it propagates throughout the day and register right before. Who cares though? The time you spend sitting aroudn waiting for the time, is the same as the time you would be waiting anyway if you had registered earlier.

the domian i registered through godaddy the other night was propogated completely within about 15 minutes. I thought that was weird. I had it hosted and put a webpage and had email running within a half an hour and everyone could access/use it!

Just because you can use it doesn't mean its propagated. I can connect through 3-5 different isps and theres definately a difference in when they update their dns. The freebie dialup one can take up to 5 days.

Yeah, I realize that. But there has definitely been a change in the speed. I have been using the same IP the whole time, with the same nameservers, and this time it was a LOT faster.
