Crap was sort of a mini curse word initially. It was like the cuss word you would say if you wanted to cuss, but didn't want to get into as much trouble as a saying shit/fuck/etc. I remember getting in trouble for saying it in the late 80's / early 90's. When I was a 12 or so, though, my parents didn't care about it anymore.
Couldn't say it in school either. You guys must be 20 or something because I'm not even 30
Kind of this.
Perhaps this is the 'reverse treadmill.' Bad->okay, rather than: okay->bad.
I'm close to 30 and can remember 'crap' being mundane but still unwanted in some households. It was what Bart Simpson, that evil little bastard on that
inappropriate show would say...yeah, in the early 90's, The Simpsons was 'edgy' to parents with grade/middle school kids.
Seems like no modern parent gives a crap...about crap. 'Hell' has gotten close to similar status. 'Bitch' and 'ass' are mid-tier at best, given that they have legit uses. Shit is the queen and fuck will always be king...but one of those has made it to primetime TV and the other can be said (sparingly) in a PG-13 movie. Everything has come down the line a bit.
But then there is the supplanting of those top tier words with 'insensitive' or 'hate' words. wise and beautiful woman, i love you, n-the-only-banned-on-ATOT-word...
It's a tangled web of cursing that we fucking weave.
