I was reading the latest article in anandtech, about dells DTR notebooks. I was thinking of getting the inspiron with the go7800, but they mentioned that oblivion was only playable on the XPS 1710.

so does somone want to clarify that for me? If I had a 600$ graphics card oblivion had damned well be more than "playable".

so are these real world specs? did they replace the card drivers with the desktop ones like i've been reading about on forums?

I don't think the 7800 Go was ever a $600 video card. Maybe the GTX version.

As for playable, no doubt they mean at a resolution of 1920x1200.

So far, there really isn't a card that does all that well with Oblivion. It brings even X1900s to their knees. At the same time, its actually quite playable at relatively low framerates.

If you want to know something even more absurd, know that the Oblivion developers actually removed some of the more demanding graphical touches because they were too much for current systems. I think they said they're going to put them back in with the expansion(s), since by then we might have cards that can play with them turned on.

I was referring to the go7900GTX being a 600$ card.

but yeah, thanks for the clarification. I really think it's stupid that they release a game you have to be a millionare to enjoy to the full extent. Maybe i'll play in a year or two, but untill then it's NFS most wanted for me.

I'm not a millionaire and I'm enjoying it. Look at my rig specs...not exactly super high end, not even SLI or Crossfire. I run at 1280x1024 (native res of my LCD) with detail turned up and some LOD tweaks and texture mods but with self shadows off and HDR on. Game looks and plays fantastic. It rarely if ever drops below 30fps. If you turn down the resolution a bit the game runs fine on most cards.

My brother plays Oblivion at 1024 * 768 on a 6200 64bit 128mg, mem is running at 820mhz. And from what he tells me its runnign fine, although the quality options are way turned down. U dont need a fast gfx card if u turn down the quality, but we cant have that can we ;)

The go7800 was a 12 pipe design according to that same article. A far cry from the 7800gt or 7800gtx with 20 or 24 pipes. Wouldn't surprise me if they where both clocked faster too. The go7800 sounds more like a 6800 gs or 7600 gt if you wanna compare to desktop cards.

the go 7800gtx is only 20 pipes.

the 7800 plain is only 12.

and lower gpu/mem clocks. the 7800 go 12 pipe, is probably barely faster than a 7600gt pci-e desktop card. that said, i dont understand why people even bother gaming on laptops. its just a waste of money.

Eh, the game runs just fine on modern hardware. The people who have performance issues are those trying to run it at 1600x1200 or higher. The advent of large LCD panels with native resolutions of 1920x1200(or higher)have raised the bar in terms of video card performance.

I've got 7800gtx sli and even with that the game chugs outdoors at 1920x1200.
