Since when did the opteron become favourite over the X2?

The past week or two everyones been reccomending opteron dual core to people, why? Whats the big difference between this and the X2? Why has it only been recommended recently, are dual core opterons new or somthing?

s939 dual core opterons are new. And they overclock very well.

I want one... :heart:

Mostly because the opterons have more cache than the 3800 X2, and are cheaper, and overclock just as well. So faster chip for less money.

yup. the 165 is less than $300, clocked 200 mhz slower than the $320ish X2 3800+ but has an extra 512kb per core.

definitely worth it.

Well the 165 is cheaper than the 3800, but I think it remains to be seen if the average 165 will overclock better than the 3800, not to mention the xtra challenges of working with a 9x multi..

Any motherboard or on die mem controller worth it's salt should be able to reach 300HTT.

So let me see, getting a dual core that possibly can do 2.7ghz with 1mb for each core for just under $300? Yup, looks like a pretty good deal to me.

I guess you can say that about any CPU one intends to overclock. ;)
