The worst thing about Gamestop is that there is little to no competition when it comes to the used games market. They are the Starbucks of this market and that is why you cannot trade in your used games for more than a couple bucks if you are lucky unless the game happens to be practically new and you decided that you are done playing it after a month in which case you might get 50% back at most.
It would be great for the consumer if there was more competition out there for used games. Let's face it, wouldn't you love to go shop at a different game store which offered used games for a cheaper price and gave you a couple more bucks per game that is traded in?

I don't hate them, they're just not the greatest.
Things I don't like:
1. Gutting new games for display then selling them as new, my #1 pet peeve
2. Pre order pressure, even more so when they're pushing some game I've never heard of but its on the cover of Game Informer this month
3. Used prices are too high for my tastes, but that is just my opinion.
4. Only having enough games on the release day to cover their pre orders
Things I like:
1. Being able to preorder and pay off games before release
2. Lots of locations
3. Pretty much the last video game dedicated store out there

Gamestop always seems to sell their games for $5 more then the other stores.

i would never, ever trade in a game at gamstop unless it was one of those deals that gives you double the value or something.
you can sell em on forums, craigslist, or even ebay for what you would get in gamestop.
the only people i really ever see trading in games there are little kids who don't know any better.

The advantages to selling your games at GameStop are that they don't check the condition of the game, and they'll take whatever you want to sell them, even if it has zero chance of ever re-selling. If you were operating your business along those lines, would you be able to be price competitive with the forums, eBay, or whatever? I think not.
You really have to put the pricing in context with policy.
Sure, but not only are they paying $2.50 for those games (and it adds up!), but they're taking up valuable shelf and storage space. GameStops aren't usually located in warehouses - they're in malls, where space is at a premium.Originally posted by: purbeast0

ah that is very true.
however those games you will probably get diddly squat for even if you do trade em in. i mean i've seen kids go in and trade like 10 games in and get like $25 total. that is pretty bad. i'd rather keep 10 games then get $25. but then again these are usually kids who just want a new game.

I've always liked Gamestop and I prefer to give them my money for a new game rather than the Big Boxes like Best Buy and Target.

When I buy and sell my games, I do it on the forums or eBay. But I'm not going to blast GameStop just because they don't have great pricing. There are many other good criticisms of them. 🙂

It's not $2.50. It's more like $1-$1.50 for the games that you are describing which would not sell on Ebay. On top of that, they are spreading all over plazas in the larger cities now. It's like Starbucks. They are not only in malls anymore.
I truly believe that there is room and demand for competition in the used games market. It's just a matter of time before someone comes up with a business plan that places a thorn in Gamestop's side. Of course, Gamestop will most likely just try to buy them out and I wouldn't blame the business owner for giving in because it will probably be for a lot of money.

ebay/craigslist is gamestop's competition for used games.
