Since when did people hate Gamestop?

Some people are of the opinion that if they don't choose X, X should be obliterated off the planet so no one else can choose it. It's self-centered arrogance, but such is life.

I've always liked Gamestop and I prefer to give them my money for a new game rather than the Big Boxes like Best Buy and Target.

I don't hate them, they're just not the greatest.

Things I don't like:

1. Gutting new games for display then selling them as new, my #1 pet peeve
2. Pre order pressure, even more so when they're pushing some game I've never heard of but its on the cover of Game Informer this month
3. Used prices are too high for my tastes, but that is just my opinion.
4. Only having enough games on the release day to cover their pre orders

Things I like:

1. Being able to preorder and pay off games before release
2. Lots of locations
3. Pretty much the last video game dedicated store out there

The only thing I use GameStop for is ordering used games online and entering coupon codes to get good deals. If not for the coupons I wouldn't bother.

That's why I pretty much always ask if there's a new one. They don't even try to say, "but this is new" and they just give me a cellophane-wrapped one 🙂.

They're usually cool about that around here. They tend to ask something like, "Any pre-orders you want to make?" They may list off a couple upcoming games or something, but never say, "Oh man, MGS4 is coming out soon... you gotta pre-order!"

Agreed.

The manager of the store that I visit actually explained this one time. He said that typically shipments only come in a certain number. Say 30 per box or whatever. They tend to order enough to fill their pre-orders and maybe have a bit of overflow. So sometimes for a game that may not be horribly popular, they will order enough to hold their pre-orders and that may leave enough left in stock for the couple people that will come in and buy it.

It's kinda fun for me because they know who I am when I walk in there 😱.

I don't think this article is about hating Gamestop as much as hating Gamestop for having an exclusive specials. Although, after reading the article, it seems the guy is fairly biased against Gamestop 😛. Seems he needs to L2AskForANewCopy.

The worst thing about Gamestop is that there is little to no competition when it comes to the used games market. They are the Starbucks of this market and that is why you cannot trade in your used games for more than a couple bucks if you are lucky unless the game happens to be practically new and you decided that you are done playing it after a month in which case you might get 50% back at most.

It would be great for the consumer if there was more competition out there for used games. Let's face it, wouldn't you love to go shop at a different game store which offered used games for a cheaper price and gave you a couple more bucks per game that is traded in?

the only thing that bugs me about gamestop is they constantly bombard you with questions about preordering. but i typically go to the same one now and they know not to bug me so it doesn't bother me at all.

you can get some really slick deals too if you just wait for their coupons.

i would never, ever trade in a game at gamstop unless it was one of those deals that gives you double the value or something.

you can sell em on forums, craigslist, or even ebay for what you would get in gamestop.

the only people i really ever see trading in games there are little kids who don't know any better.

The problem I have with Gamestop is that their merchandise is usually overpriced. Sometimes I'll go in looking for a used copy of a game I want (after having checked online prices), yet the used copy there costs just as much as a new copy online! Why would I pay the same amount for a used game without a box cover?

Probably 'cause they tried to buy GH3 w/ a GH2 price tag and the GS associated told them to fuck off.

Gamestop always seems to sell their games for $5 more then the other stores.

All new games are sold for $60 for new consoles at gamestop and any other store I've been to.

The advantages to selling your games at GameStop are that they don't check the condition of the game, and they'll take whatever you want to sell them, even if it has zero chance of ever re-selling. If you were operating your business along those lines, would you be able to be price competitive with the forums, eBay, or whatever? I think not.

You really have to put the pricing in context with policy.

ah that is very true.

however those games you will probably get diddly squat for even if you do trade em in. i mean i've seen kids go in and trade like 10 games in and get like $25 total. that is pretty bad. i'd rather keep 10 games then get $25. but then again these are usually kids who just want a new game.

Sure, but not only are they paying $2.50 for those games (and it adds up!), but they're taking up valuable shelf and storage space. GameStops aren't usually located in warehouses - they're in malls, where space is at a premium.

When I buy and sell my games, I do it on the forums or eBay. But I'm not going to blast GameStop just because they don't have great pricing. There are many other good criticisms of them. 🙂

Same here. Price comes first, so I'll buy it at Costco or somewhere else if I can get a deal. But all else equal, I'd rather buy my games at a game store.

I love their buy 2 get 1 free used sales and their weekly coupons that are occasionally pretty good. Stacking coupons + Edge card or Buy 2 Get 1 + Edge card makes their normally poor used game prices (~10% off) much better.

I don't trade in or sell my used games, ever. I've given some away, but never sold or traded in a game. I could live with buying the display copy at full price if it came to that (and it's in perfect condition), but obviously I'd prefer to get one in cellophane. I never pre-order, and they rarely nag me after asking once.

It's not $2.50. It's more like $1-$1.50 for the games that you are describing which would not sell on Ebay. On top of that, they are spreading all over plazas in the larger cities now. It's like Starbucks. They are not only in malls anymore.

I truly believe that there is room and demand for competition in the used games market. It's just a matter of time before someone comes up with a business plan that places a thorn in Gamestop's side. Of course, Gamestop will most likely just try to buy them out and I wouldn't blame the business owner for giving in because it will probably be for a lot of money.

They do have several competitors... just not big competitors.

ebay/craigslist is gamestop's competition for used games.

The same fact remains - they are paying money for something that they're just not going to be selling. Maybe even something in such bad shape they _can't_ sell it. Little quantities add up over time.

On top of that, they are spreading all over plazas in the larger cities now. It's like Starbucks. They are not only in malls anymore.

Again, they're renting out small places. That's part of their business model - to save on rent. It's not a coincidence that most GameStops look roughly the same.

ebay/craigslist is gamestop's competition for used games.

And Blockbuster on a limited basis. And Gamefly. And Amazon.com. And Gamecrazy. And there's another small chain that is growing that Duddy wanted to open a franchise of... There's competition out there.

I read an article that GS is sitting on millions of copies of madden 200x

hence, low trade in value
