Sometimes people don't like waiting for a stack of paper to be printed on.

i didn't know people still had printing presses. i thought it usually took more to time waiting for something to come in the mail or going to the store to actually buy it. i guess i'm one of the few people that are ahead of the technology curve and got myself a laserjet. :awe:

do you realize how long the typical guide is? you'd be printing out hundreds of pages. unless you have a heavy duty printer, and have lots of paper and toner around, it's easier to just buy a guide (or just read the guide on screen and memorize key points).

you've never used a strategy guide before have you? a print out does'nt compare to a nicely put together, full color guide. I love em

i've had them before. FF7 and RE2. they do add an extra layer of personality but personally i've never felt the novelty of it all. it's just a glorified cheatsheet to me.

I don't understand the point of these things. Isn't the fun part of games figuring things out on your own? What a waste of money.

Back in the '80's I paid $10 for a Leisure Suit Larry GG. Was a small booklet with some Headers for different parts of the game, with Invisible Hints that you revealed with a yellow marker. It was useful, but I never bought another Guide since.

It takes about 7 seconds to print a piece of paper on my printer. A stack of paper is 200 sheets and an in depth guide on the net can be that long.

200*7/60 = 23 minutes and 20 seconds. Including material costs of paper and ink usage along with the time involved (would be a little longer as you would have to actually add paper to it in most cases) I could drive around the corner to Gamestop or Wal Mart, buy the guide and be home before it is done printing.

Yeah it's a thing that is unique to each type of player IMO. Some may have attentive disorders or compulsive personalities so a guide might be perfect for them to help beat the game.

Others like exploration without the assistance of someone or something that knows what you're supposed to do.

I've seen too many kinds of gaming personalities, makes me want to write a book one day and make lots of monies.

like DaveSimmons already pointed out, that depends on the type of the game, and the amount of time you can and are willing to put into the game. they can be a real time saver.

cheating is part of the game. did you ever own a game genie? did you not feel the power that you possessed?

its kind of ironic that as kids we want things easy even though we have all the time in the world to figure it out. then as adults we use the game guides because we don't have all the time in the world and you just want to get the good parts. :p

Fair enough I suppose, but I don't game to save time, it's usually to waste time. If it's a game where I want to save time and get through as quickly as possible, then it's generally a game I don't want to play. Could just be me though.

Nah, I never had a Game Genie (too poor). I use cheats in games sometimes, but usually only after I have already beaten it, or if i hit an impossible spot to get through.

Some games have optional side quests or minigames. Some people just like to complete a lot of them. For example, in FF7 you can get a golden chocobo by breeding various chocobos together and by using different foods. You could eventually get one by trial and error, but it would take ages to do. Or you can use the game guide.

I use Gamefaq a lot, but sometimes text descriptions of how to get through a maze just doesn't work well.

Yeah, I don't understand why there's still a market for game guides

this.

whenever I needed something, I could just find it on GameFaqs (which are generally 100% plagiarized from the printed guides by little kiddies).

For the very rare issues that I would need info nearby, I could print out ridiculous item lists and recipes.

Game guides are for suckahs!

Game Guides are like art books. Don't use them personally but I find that the RPGs today are getting complex with the hidden item/quests that determine if you get the super duper good ending. I can see how if you don't have all the time in world how a game guide would be useful.

Or you don't want to play the same old boring game 10,000 times just to find that one extra save point or something.

Damn, the FF3 guide doesn't seem to have a high price tag, but I used that damn thing so much when I was playing it has much more sentimental value.
One of the saddest things I've ever read.

What? RPGs today are linear and ridiculous. I watched my buddy play 15 minutes of the latest Final Fantasy. No towns, your party auto-battles Street Fighter 2-style, there is exactly one path to follow, etc.

RPGs these days fucking blow.

Try Demon's Souls. Content is short, but it's pretty awesome. Release from oct 2009 (feb 09 in japan).

One of the saddest things I've ever read.

This coming from the guy with 60,000+ posts on an Internet forum, even with that little extended sabbatical.

..which I guess if you factor that in you've seen some sad things in your days, I think I'm honored.

Good thing there's no hidden side quests/items in FF13... :D
