Since we seem to be on the topic of equality......

Why does a man, at the age of 18 by law, have to sign up for the draft and women don't? Women for many years have fought for equal rights. They have also fought for equal rights to be in the military. Then why don't they have to sign up for the draft?

Women Aren't Required to Register

Here's why:
THE LAW
Selective Service law as it's written now refers specifically to "male persons" in stating who must register and who would be drafted. For women to be required to register with Selective Service, Congress would have to amend the law.

THE SUPREME COURT
The constitutionality of excluding women was tested in the courts. A Supreme Court decision in 1981, Rostker v. Goldberg, held that registering only men did not violate the due process clause of the Constitution.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
At President Clinton's request, the Department of Defense reviewed this issue in 1994. DoD noted that America's prior drafts were used to supply adequate numbers of Army ground combat troops. Because women are excluded by policy from front line combat positions, excluding them from the draft process remains justifiable in DoD's view. Although no conclusions were reached, DoD recognized that policies regarding women need to be reviewed periodically because the role of women in the military continues to expand.

The Selective Service System, if given the mission and additional funding, is capable of registering and drafting women with its existing infrastructure.

He reiterated that they are not required to sign up and the laws stating why, but not the reason behind them. There is no valid reason, from a view of pure equality (I won't argue that a woman would be as good a soldier as a man, but that is beside the point here).

not necessarly, she could be fighting at the front next to you, and i'm sure that some women do, but it just takes a certain type to be able to. chances are she would be some type of medical support.

That wasn't my point. I know there hasn't been a draft in a long time. My point was that men are required to register and women aren't, even though they are allowed in the military. I mean, if we're gonna be equal, lets do this all the way. If there ever was to be another draft, as it stands, only men are going to be called up. And out of those men, some are not gonna want to go while others will. It would be the same for women. Some would want to go, while others wouldn't. They should have to register as well.

the reason is simple, the people that make the law are old/parents, they aren't going to pass a law like that to make their daughters get drafted

and the people that elect the lawmakers aren't going to support something like that either

write a letter to any of the campaigns for president or congress this year and see if they are willing to take this up as a campaign issue

"Draft Women into the Military" as a campaign slogan isn't going to get anybody elected anytime soon

It's not beside the point, it IS the point. There are plenty of women out there who are physically capable of fighting beside a man, but the draft does not differentiate. Would you want your life to depend on the physical abilities of an average woman, or an average man?

Edit: Equal RIGHTS != Equality

I think it is rediculous. Why should I have a higher chance of going to war and getting killed than Jane Doe? It's so stupid.
