Since so many people here seem to think they have it bad, consider this...

A guy was killed in a freak machinery accident just a few hundred feet from my desk. I didn't know the guy, so there is no real reason for anyone to feel sorry for me. But I understand that he had a family, and of course lots of people will miss him. A lot of people here are really torn up about it.

It kind of puts things in perspective.

The guy was standing behind a backhoe doing some work on it. The backhoe had its support feet down. Somehow the guy accidently hit one of the controls, and the digging arm hit him and crushed him against one of the feet.

Factories are a dangerous place. 🙁

I spent 3 summer breaks and 3 winter breaks in a steel mill melt shop. Damn near fell into a ladle of molten steel once...that scared the bejezus out of me.

I had a job one summer working for the GSA in DC. Guys were always getting killed by exploding steampipes. I think there was some agreement with the WaPo because their articles always said "critically injured" even if they died at the site.

You think he had it bad? I heard that several people died in Iraq and they're just civilians. 😉

People die at my work all the time. (customers, not my co-workers)
I hear you. I haven't had anyone die on me yet though...

(knock on wood)
