I have to pay $9.95 a month if I want Money to download my checking account info automatically. Otherwise, I can just log into the BoA website and download transaction info manually.

Well, mint logs into your account for you and pulls your transaction and balance. So no payment needed in this case.

I use Quicken. I'm paranoid about tracking that kind of thing... use Pocket Quicken too.

What's Microsoft Money? I don't think I have heard that name in nearly 10 years.

Mint.

Mint.

Mint doesn't have any sort of import function does it? I have years of past data with MS Money and would hate to lose that history...

Also, last time I demo'ed Mint it didn't seem to update properly... the numbers always seemed off, but maybe I didn't set it up right.

I agree that I've never seen the need for this software. All it seems to do is waste time. My check automatically gets deposited into my account and all of my bills automatically get deducted. There's not really anything to track.

That's how I saw it, two credit cards, one checking account, not really much to keep track of. I now realize some people's financial needs are admittedly more complex than mine. I nominate myself for self pwnage

I don't use the auto balance thingy so something tells me my version of 2006 will be fine for at least a few more years.

You could just move over to OpenOffice. :)

Has anyone ever used GnuCash? I primarily use a spread sheet I made in OOo Calc, but I'm looking for something a little more robust.

I'm disappointed that Microsoft is dumping this. I'm probably gonna end up moving over to Quicken. hopefully I can download transactions directly from the program rather than importing them from banks.

I'm satisfied with the amount of work my money does, though if it could clean the bathrooms a little more often I wouldn't complain. It's not satisfying to me to know where every penny went. If I cared that much I wouldn't have spent it in the first place. I know what all of my bills are every month, I know how much I make every month. I'm content throwing money into investments and letting them be for retirement. There's not much more I need to know. Did I spend $2400 last year eating out? Good for me. I guess a lot of people use it to forecast, can we get that car? I would rather put some money away and buy it when I have the cash. I don't need a program to let me know that I now have $10k in savings and can buy one.

I had Quicken for a while, tried Money, was unsatisfied and went back to Quicken. If only Quicken could do the auto-login business to BoA, I would be satisfied.

u r so full of it ... you are the same guy who made a spreadsheet to track imaginary/ future LOTTERY winnings and you track to 9 decimal digits (that too on a motorbike ride that supposed to be get-away-from-it) ... here are some of your posts:

on lottery : >>>I forgot I made a spreadsheet dealing with this. The only thing it's missing is how it would be taxed. <<<

>>>It's funny to see this post, because the other night before I went to bed I was wondering what I would do if I had a magical drawer i my house that every time I opened it it was full of 50 packs of $100 bills. How long would you keep opening it up and taking the money out until you were sure that there would always be money available? And then the same question, how would you live with infinite money without getting in trouble with the law.<<<<

>>>I like the Costco pizza you cook at home. I'm not sure if it's just the CT Costco's that sell it, but the Mystic Pizza there is very good, and much cheaper than the stores in the area.<<< "kudos :)"

why all the number keeping, just enjoy the ride per your philosophy ... tank empty .. fill up .. man, so u track each penny of gas on a trip where you are extolling how great it is to be away from the work / computer and yet ... oh irony ... nm ...

oh boy ... u just dont get the thrill of app-o-ramas or cc rewards or % chasers ... nm ... knowledge is knowledge .. you keep thinking only ppl who have to save up for cars and such need planning ... and please do realize when your extolling the cost of costco pizza, you are doing the same thing, now just multiply that into a big scale like buying the next rental property or land or such ...

love to know your social circle, "staying within the means" is and should be "normal" and nothing to boast of ...

oh did I mention, i esp. love where u track numbers upto 7 decimal digits :)

and this gonna hurt: you are a romantic poseur ... try taking a trip without 9 digit record keeping ... just ride man ride ...

It's easier to estimate using 7 decimal places or whatever the default is than to change Excel to do 2! I'd be an fool not to see how much money I'd have to invest each month to meet my retirement goals. I don't see how itemizing how much I spent on coffee last month helps with that goal.

I'm also not sure how keeping track of my fuel economy figures in to MS money. I never denied liking number crunching. In the case of my cross country trips one person pays for everything and then we split it up after the trip. As you can see from my trip write-ups, I also list my mileage for the day for those who are interested in the route. Since both are recorded it's pretty trivial to find out the fuel economy. Knowing that my fuel economy dropped 5 MPG lets me know there's a problem on my bike, knowing that I went out to eat two extra times last month doesn't help me know anything except that I need to work out more, which I already know!

On any financial decision I will make a spreadsheet to see if it's worth it. I wouldn't pull in my credit card statements to help with that decision.

The point about Costco pizza just re-enforces the point. I try to make an informed decision with my money as I spend it. Once I eat that pizza it doesn't much matter what I paid for it.

"Staying within your means should be normal." Tell that to America.

again you are so full of it ... so excel suddenly defaults to 2 decimal places automatically when it comes to certain numbers ... man i would love to get that mind reading excel ...

and thanks for selective replying to only certain points ... you dont get it ... I use fin sws daily and never ever ran a report to find out how much i spent on coffee ... but I can tell you how much I spent on doorstoppers for each of my rental properties ... you dont know what fin. sw can do if thats what you think they are good for ... good record tracking helps you make better future financial decisions ... and you cannot disagree with that since you already admitted how dropping mpg tells you about the condition of your bike ... same thing when translated into renters / inv. ...

btw ... i gotta go now and check if i can buy that doorstopper for the next rental ... yeah I consult fin. sw to but the next $1.25 doorstopper ... /sarcasm ...

no point bringing in-service dates / repairs / fixed asset / aors etc. you are stuck on price of coffee ...
