Since I don't like AntiVir too much what else should I try?

In other words, what's ONE STEP down from AntiVir in terms of best detection rates among the FREE anti-virus software choices?

I just hate AntiVir's interface, Win95-style graphics and icons, and how I must have another app running just to do my scheduled scans and updates.

I used EZ Trust for a year or so until my free subscription expired. It didn't see to hog much system resources and worked OK. I don't get many (if any) viruses, so I don't know how well the detection rate performs.

It's free for a year, though.

So what DOESN'T have crappy detection rates in the 50% range? Both AVG and E-Trust are down there, I believe.

Did you not read the detection rate results that JustAnAverageGuy posted?

IMHO $35/yr. is a small price to pay to have the best AV (Kaspersky Personal v5) on the market. One nasty virus that slips thru when you are using an inferior AV will cost you more than $35 of your time. :p
