Since getting Usenet Access, something has really bothered me

So I purchased usenet access about a month ago, and its been amazing so far. Ive been able to download things at a 2 MBPS rate! I wasnt even able to transfer documents over a local network at these speeds.

I can download large amounts of data in less than 2 hours.

Now here is what has really pissed me off. Why arent there more legitimate uses for this kind of thing? I can download a HD movie in 2 hours. That means that you can easily stream or buy things over the internet, yet it isn't happening.

The technology is out there. This could be done very easily by the movie companies. Yet they still decide to stay in their old ways and not embrace new technology like this.

If just one company went out on a limb and provided a great content service with uber-fast connections like usenet, they would be able to make money hand over fist. It just pisses me off entirely that they arent embracing the internet. Its so backwards it is ridiculous.

Anyone else really bothered by this type of thing?

I'd prefer torrents to usenet.

I think reliability is the issue and reason why central servers<-> clients is the business model and not decentralized, peer-to-peer distribution. Though peer-to-peer would work great for large scale streaming of popular content, like for HD television.

The first rule of usenet is, you do not talk about usenet.

The second rule of usenet is, you do not talk about usenet.

yeah yeah, I know usenet is old technology.

But my point is its gotten faster and faster to the point where I can download 20 GBs of data in less than a day. Thats insane and nobody is tapping the potential of that yet.

Isn't usenet like older than the internet?
Yes. It was the preferred way of getting pr0n back in the 2800 baud days.

Still the preferred way of getting pr0n. 😛

I don't want anything about usenet released to the mass majority. I enjoy it being a smaller community free of P2P/Kazaa morons.

Really all you're talking about is fast servers. This has nothing to do with Usenet.

yeah, exactly. I just havent had access to fast servers like these before and it just blows my mind that there arent companies out there taking advantage of this technology.

Um, the speed of the download has nothing to do with the fact that it's usenet. You're just paying for usenet through a pretty fast provider.

Uh, they are. You pay for your own server and see how fast it is. Large companies aren't going to give you priority access to their connection for free. You get to share it with all the other users downloading at the same time.

What technology? All you're doing is downloading a file from fast servers. The only thing special about the protocol is the replication and archival aspect.

And 1st rule DAMMIT!

Also if you get a "real" internet connection you will get full news feeds to your NNTP servers.

What is usenet? I don't get it. And I can downoad things at 2mb/s rate too, without it. So I fail to see the advantage...
