I have been using my tdk velocd 32/12/10 rewriter for everything in my computer just fine for a few months now and the other day when I tried to listen to an audio cd I got nothing. This drive you can always here rattle a bit and spinup when a new disk is loaded and it usually takes less than 10 seconds to access a cd rom.
So my audio disk wouldn't play, it didn't spinup, and I couldnt get access to a game I wanted to install or my latest backup cd. I tried popping the disc out and in a couple times without luck.
Now what happens is soon after I get in windows the green led blinks fast 9 times, pauses then continues the cycle.
Its been a few days and I have wanted to listen to music and play games and tried rebooting and maybe a couple times I was able to get a music cd to play. But then I would notice it would take a long time for the drive to switch tracks, and most of the time when it did work would crash the cd player. Plus the drive still didn't make the spinup noise and you can here the drive struggling allot.
Also a couple times now the button to open the tray wouldn't respond.
Their is power and Im using this on my exact same rig with win98se. Haven't changed a thing or settings and its like night and day with this problem, never having had any cd media give me troubles in the past few months. The cd rom is shown on the startup screen and listed in the device manager as working and I can make changes to auto insert, etc.
So I was just thinking since its obvious its not spinning and it isn't reading any media and their are no drivers for cd roms that my drive is just screwed up for some reason so soon after purchase huh?
I have to call tdk to get an rma and think its under warranty I just have to pay for insured shipping back, and its no big deal cause I got a crap cd rom in the house. But I was just wondering if maybe their is any truth to what people say about not using these cdrs for everyday use, or if tdk sucks, or if its just one of those things. I don't want to keep this brand if it sucks crap and will die every couple months.
