Since Bush retreated to Iraq, does this mean car company bailout = dead?

since the senate (ie: UAW union) killed the auto bailout bill on Fri, Bush said the Whitehouse will act.

but we havent heard anything concrete yet.

And now Bush is in Iraq.

i interpret this as Bush backtracking on using the $700B financial bailout to help the auto companies.

How do you interpret Bush leaving the USA in the middle of the US automaker crisis?

I interpret it as the Treasury Department handling it.

Advisors: Mr. President what do we tell the media about the automakers ?
Bush: The wha what ?
Advisors: The automakers and where we stand on the bailout ?
Bush: bailout ? Why would I bailout, the plane is fine .
Advisors: No , Mr. President, the bailout of money for the automakers to keep them from going bankrupt.
Bush: Bankrupt ? We aren't bankrupt, we just bought a new house, Laura likes it a lot.
Advisors: What do we tell the media that our decision is about where we stand ?
Bush: Its time to stand ? Just show me where and get that speech ready .

Probably correct, but the original question is quite on point nonetheless. We've heard nothing this weekend and I Hope gov is working.

First of all we must understand any congressional rescue bail out for the big three was killed by the GOP in the Senate. That calculus will radically change when the new congress conveniences in early 2009, well ahead of the 1/20/2009 official end of the GWB administration.

Meanwhile, it looks like GWB may do something positive to keep out automotive industry jobs alive, and he may do it through the treasury department. Unlike Cad, I hope GWB will do something positive for a change.

This is the first thing Republicans have done in YEARS that I agree with. There is no need to bail out the big 3 FAILURES. Let them go into chapter 11 already..

If we had a healthy economy, I might agree with 5150 joker, but when one in 10 American jobs depend on the auto industry in a bad economy, the loss of those jobs will propel us from a mere recession, into a full blown depression in a cascading effect.

Why in the world would you make that assumption? The president can do his job from anywhere in the world, including on Air Force One in flight.

I don't think so. It would be a temporary setback but someone would take over those factories as well as all the IP for GM/Chrysler/Ford and do a better job with it. It would take some time but in the end our economy would be better off and taxpayers wouldn't have to keep propping up failed corporations.

Some people seemed to think hanging out on the strip in Vegas was more important than the hearings with the heads of the automakers.

Story Here

Probably right. Air Force one is pretty low tech. No way Bush could get anything done on that airplane.

It is good that they are going over the books. The figures coming from all the parties involved vary pretty wildly. I'd sure like to know if the differential between union vs. transplant workers is $2000 or $600 per vehicle that different parties are throwing around. It sounds like any deal might hinge on an acceleration of the changes coming in 2010 which will bring the hourly differential between those two down to $3/hr. (Text).

That's the problem with the propagandists - the jobs will not all be lost if the auto-makers file for bankruptcy. I'd be surprised if even a quarter of the jobs were lost. Even so, That $14b could go into welfare, it'll aid any laid-off workers, and they'd pick their jobs back up when the company finally properly restructures. Everybody wins.

I said elsewhere, this war for the bailouts is eerily similar to the war on terror in how the arguments, tactics, and insults get thrown around. ;) From the fear mongering over jobs & the economy to calling the other side un-American & unpatriotic. :p It's quite funny to watch it all play out.
