hi all,

just got folding@home running on my computer. is it possible to run seti@home at the same time i'm running "folding" w/o any problems or conflictions? i don't see why not but wanted to check since i'm new to distributed computing.

thanks,

Hey chipy!

Well, that really depends on the type of CPU you have. If it is a P4 with HT, then you can run one instance of F@H and one of SETI at the same time and they should each take 50% of your CPU time. If you don't have a P4 (or a real dual CPU setup) then I would say you should decide on only one project at a time. I mean, they'll both run but they'll do it very slow and it won't get you anywhere. Just imagine, you play Doom3 and HalfLife2 at the same time. Yes, they'll both run bot how?! And it's even possible, that either SETI or F@H will just take over the whole CPU and the other one won't get any spare cycles at all.

hey BlackMountainCow,

thanks for the advice... i'll stick to just running one at a time... your reasoning does make sense!

btw, nice icon!!

i dont have a cow avatar so can i post on this thread?!? 🙂 if you are running a P4 with HT enabled, some projects take more cpu than others and can be more aggressive and use more than the 50% represented in task manager. i have run SETI and F@H together before and they played nicely together. like BMC said, if you don't have a P4 there is little (if any point) to running multiple instances of projects at the same time.

No! 😛 😉

It also works fine if you have a dual-CPU system. In fact, SETI's limited by memory bandwidth, so I recommend running a different project on a second CPU.
