Simply cannot install an operating system, HELP!

Hey there,

To make a long story short, I put together a new rig today and for some reason, I cannot install Windows XP. After the XP CD formats my drive and copies the installation folder, it says "A Disk Read error has occurred". Anyone familiar with this problem?

Here are the specs for my rig:

e6300
AsRock 4coredual VSTA
2GB Super Talent 667MHz Ram
500GB WD SATA HDD
20X IDE Liteon Dvd Burner

Any ideas?

1. Run MemTest.
2. Try a different XP CD if one is available.
3. Try to reconnect/replace the cables to both your HD and your DVD-ROM.

My friend just ran into this exact same problem.(trying to install XP on a newly formatted HD that worked fine in W2K)

No solution yet, and one of the possible fixes from the forums(fixboot) just killed her old HD.
When the old OS on the old HD was working, the XP install made the new HD be seen as a removable drive in W2K. Might explain why XP doesn't see it as a boot drive.

after the fixboot deal, bios doesn't see any HDs. She doesn't have any spare pc parts to test with either.

any ideas?

Scroll to the bottom of http://www.mechbgon.com/build/resources.html and look for the diagnostic utility for your brand of HDD.

Installing on a SATA drive on today's motherboards may require providing disk-controller drivers for Windows Setup to use, even if it sees the drive when you don't provide drivers. This is a change from the behavior you've become accustomed to in the recent past, so watch for that and consult your tiresome ol' motherboard owner's manual.
