Under
control panel> system > hardware > device manager > computer
my computer is listed as an "Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) PC"
My motherboard *does* support ACPI.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? All I want is a nice stable desktop PC for working and occasionally gaming on (q2, q3a, ut).

thanks...

That's a good thing because unless you have it. Your computer can't go standby or hibernate.

It's normally a good thing, although with the way that ACPI assigns IRQs for your peripherals to just one number, it may cause problems for some people.

I have ACPI installed, but I don't have hibernate. I think that I forgot to set APM off in the bios setup last time I reinstalled Win2k. Dang...

ThurzNite: did you enable Hibernate in the Power Settings applet under Control Panel?

crack block? never heard of it...
Andy: I figured out why i can't hibernate anymore...not enough hd space. I have 128mb ram but only like 68mb hd free. Lame me. Anyways, it's time to clean out some junk.
However, I use my 540mb hd (d drive) for swap file. Why can't I use that drive for my hibernate file? Any ideas?
And for anybody else who's trying to get your acpi computer to register as acpi in the control panel, the trick is to stick in your setup cd and boot to it. While it's loading up it's drivers in the beginning, right when you see the blue screen, hit F3 (can someone verify? i usually punch f2, f3, and f5 cuz i don't remember exactly). Scroll up in the popup and find ACPI or something like that. This will let you hibernate. Be warned that not all bios are compatible, so you decide if it's worth the risk.
