I am considering upgrading my compaq 5726 computer. It has a p3 500. The books stink, and the site neither confirms nor denies that I can do it, or what I need to consider. I am reasonably familiar with maintaining systems and such, but have never done anything with a processor, and am not familiar with any issues related to it.

What do I need to know, and can I even do it?

Thanks in advance!

to start off, most pc from companies like compaq, etc. have motherboards with little setting adjustments available.
but it really comes down to what you are planning to upgrade.
what are you upgrading?

My PIII 500 processor to something faster. I am not sure of what my system can take, or perhaps it can take any P3?

and most important of all, make sure the motherboard can support the cpu clock speed that you intend to run. i don't know how to do this on the compaq, but it's likely to be adjusted using jumpers. i could be wrong, but i don't see why a company like compaq would encourage a user to run its system at higher speed unless it's an upgrade.

I found this thread in the support forums and i think that this will answer some of you questions:

What processer will this MoBo support. Also what is the power supply rating on the 5726?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only the P-III 500mhz is officially supported on this board. It is conceivable that you can upgrade up to a P3-800mhz, 100mhz Front-Side Bus, Slot 1 CPU. You will need to update the BIOS using this ROMpaq, SP11738, before the upgrade. You will not need to set any of jumpers on the systemboard for the Pentium III CPU upgrade when using the Coppermine variant of this processor. The power supply is rated at 200 watts.
