Anyone ever learn something simple that made a ton of sense but you never would have thought of it on your own?

The major one I can think of I learned manning the ovens at a pizza joint. Whenever you were handling a hot pan, you always kept a spatula in your free hand. The main purpose of that was in case you dropped the hot pan, you wouldn't try to grab it with your free hand.

I still do this when taking pans out of the oven.

lol, I learned a lot from working at a pizza joint, plus it was probably the best fun I ever had a job.

I taught my 10 years old grand son not to flip the light switch with his mouth today. I hope this makes a lot of sense to him VERY soon.

OMG I hope he makes it to adulthood.

LOL

LOL

I think there's another reason he likes flipping switches with his mouth...

I always used to peel the skin off of a garlic clove until my girlfriend told me to smash it with a knife and it would come right off.

Hitch Knots. i learned their faster, doesnt leave slack behind when your done if your tieing one end and need the rope tight, can be untied easier and hold very well.

I learned a couple years ago about cooking hard boiled eggs is easier to peel when you put salt in the boiling water, after draining just shake up the pot and the shell pops right off of em in larger chunks usually.
i also learned that there is proper quality pans to cook eggs over medium without breaking....i used to always break mine when flipping, but learned its cause of incorrect pan.

exhale when lifting heavy objects and get angry beforehand makes it alot easier.

dragging a copper wire from frame of car to the ground prevents static shock...i used to get shocked pretty good from my car all the time.

i also never would have thought that beating a cat for doing bad things does not teach them anything other than to do it again whenever they wish.
live and learn right.

spatula? why not just use 2 oven mitts? thats what i done since i was a kid. seems like it would be harder to pick up a hot pan with a spatula than oven mitts.

To chop onions tear free, put them in the freezer for 10 minutes or so prior to chopping.

You wouldn't be able to handle the pizza cutter! You used a pan gripper to take the hot pans out of the oven.

Its just a habit that I have now. I always have something in my free hand just in case. Now its usually the pizza cutter.

Or wear contact lenses, either hard or soft. It seems the irritation is only on a certain part of the cornea.

THIS! OMG how much time this saved me!

How bout putting brazil nuts in the freezer for simple cracking.

When unpacking large numbers of boxes where you know the contents - use force to open the boxes instead of a knife (i.e. punch them and the tape will break)

When machining stainless using a polished uncoated tungsten carbide bit, keep your hands in your pockets. Spinning, shiny objects make you want to touch them.

That second one will make your fist hurt a lot after the 50th box.

Also, some boxes have shifted contents that attempt to split your knuckle in half when you punch the wrong place.

i got tired of peeling hard boiled eggs.

now i just poach them:
boil water, swirl water around w/utensil, crack egg into water.
the spinning water keeps the egg from disapating

There is a reason why you boil them in salt water

Eggs shells come off in a single shell if you do so.

If you have a hard time determining which months has 31 days, you can count the knuckles and the valleys, for lack of a better word. Make a fist with both hands and put them side by side so that the two index finger knuckles are next to each other. Don't count the thumb knuckle.

Starting with the knuckle on your pinky work towards the other end. So it would go:

Jan - knuckle
Feb - valley
Mar - knuckle
Apr - valley
May - knuckle
Jun - valley
Jul - knuckle
Aug - knuckle (Its knuckle because you're crossing over to the hand)
Sep - valley
Oct - knuckle
Nov - valley
Dec - knuckle

Chopping onions has never caused my eyes to tear up.

This will seem stupid because I was never into math...
I used to work in a glass shop and all our measurements had to be in decimal form instead of fractions. So it was 10.4375, not 10 7/16.
I copied a chart converting fractions to decimals and used it till someone told me that 7/16 meant 7÷16.

Learned that early in life (1st grade?) and still use it today. :$

That being said...I could never work in food again.

When I got out of the Army, I worked two jobs. The night job was delivering for Dominos. I'd also make pizzas and help close up.

It was 1987 and I got $3.60 an hour, mileage (my own vehicle) and tips. After gas, it averaged to about $8 an hour.
They wanted me to go into the "Manager in Training" program. It was a raise to $3.65 per hour, no mileage and no tips. They were surprised when I laughed at them.

But I had a lot of fun at that job. Especially closing. We'd put some beer in the walk-in, make some great pizza, crank the music and close up.
