simple temp. question

Although despite being a simple question I've been hearing different answers. So I thought I'd bring it here.

As I understand AMDs max temp for a Phenom II X4 940 is 63c. However people don't seem to agree whether that is the CPU temp or Core temp. and I see something like a 10 degree difference in the two under load. I'm wondering if I should stop worrying as much about my OC temperatures. Don't think I'm going to take it any higher either way, but it'd be nice to know for sure what I'm working with.

Temp in general seem a bit high. Make sure you have a accurate way to measure it if your planning to monitor it. That said overclocking a cpu in general will lead to it being more prone to failures and shorter lifespan due to higher temps and voltage to make it work.

I have a constant temp display from Everest in my taskbar and on my keyboard LCD. But that still doesn't answer whether the max for the core or the cpu temp is the one I should be concerned with based on the numbers AMD offers as "max safe temp. range."

That's the thread that caused me to come ask at Anandtech in the first place. I've always been told CORE temp is the one to be concerned with. They said the CPU temp in that thread. Yet it wasn't a uniform answer there, someone said CORE instead.

Even the OP in that topic is clearly never sure of the answer. If you look at it he posted 4 times and more or less asked the same question again 4 out of those 5 posts. Sounds like he's still not sure which one the last time he posted with both temps being under the lower max Foxbat listed.

I mean, OCCT doesn't even list the CPU temp, which makes it easy to believe the CORE temp is the one to be worried about.

I was pretty much just looking for validation of that thread from the crowd at Anandtech :)

obviously using core temp would be erring on the side of caution. 63c sounds pretty low for a max temp. I know jack about AMD cpu's but Intels can run at >60C 24/7 without issue.
