Is the core the green square in the middle of the CPU? I'm in the middle of installing one for the first time, and I'm trying to figure out where to apply the thermal paste for my Alpha PAL6035 cooler.

Thanks for the answer Siva. Should I just cover the core with grease, and then clamp the heatsink down, or should I put more grease on the heatsink itself?

Put a thin layer on the core, & then put the HS on. The pressure will handle the rest.

Easiest way is to put a tiny amount on the core, put your finger inside a plastic baggie (or a condom would work I suppose, preferably one that's not lubricated) & spread it out thin.

Cover the core with a thin layer of grease, and maybe leave a small glob in the middle so that it will fill in any gaps when you press the heatsink down. Don't make the coating too thick, or else your heat transfer won't be optimal.

thin coating of grease on the core, you don't want to slop it on, just make sure you have enough that you won't have any air pockets. I like squirting a bit on then spreading it with a credit card. If anything, ere on a little to much, the heatsink will squeeze the excess out. If you're planning on overclocking, or have a really fast chip (above 1 ghz) you should really be sure to do a good job and have a VERY good heatsink.
