Simple spreadsheet question

You've got a cell with some data in. AFAIK, to edit that data (let's say there's a number in there), I could either overwrite that data by selecting the cell and then typing whatever I want to be in that cell, or if there's data in it that I don't want to lose, then I have to click in the formula box and insert the text cursor where I want to start typing.

Is there a way that I can do the latter but without a mouse click?

I typically use LibreOffice but I'm interested to know what techniques people know with Excel or which ever spreadsheet program you prefer. I'd guess that if it has the feature in one package that others would implement it as well.

I use Quattro Pro, and that is pretty simple. Any formula or data is shown above in a text line - just edit and press Enter.

That sounds like Excel and LO/OO, but surely you have to click in that line in order to start editing?

Tab until the edit box becomes the focal point. Press the end key or use the arrow keys to get to the insertion point.
enter text
Use the tab key to cause the data to be saved and/or return key to save/activate

The F2 key converts any cell formula entry to an editable line in place.

with LO/OO you can doubleclick in the cell and the cell will open up and function like the formula entry box in the toolbars. you still have to click the cursor to position where you want the new entry to go.
