Using a leadtek 6800gt. Would like something just as quiet but more powerful. EVGA 7800GS or one of the new XFX 79xx series, or Radeon 1950s. For some reason I feel like my cpu may bottleneck the Radeons. Looking to play Supreme Commander, Compnay of Heroes, and C&C 3 with the best settings I can have without wasting money on something my cpu can't handle.

I would say you are already pretty close. SC wants dual core badly...

I would check the FS/FT forums for 7800GS cards. There was one for ~$110 in there a couple of days ago.

Erh, I dont think so, the 3700+ 754 is on par with the 3500+ 939 and P4 EE which all came out originally for AGP boards. The X1950Pro would be a sweet addition to your system.

I just ordered 1 for that very reason..

I can run SC @ 1920x1200 medium details with A64 socket 754 @2.5GHz + X1950Pro 512M... FPS are in 20s range.

I'm assuming AGP, but you haven't specified AGP or PCIe.

yeah sorry, its agp. Trying to hold over until quad core.

It just doesn't seem like you are going to get much value for your money by upgrading from a 6800GT. If you had a 6600GT or 9800Pro, that would be a different story. Really, you did good when you set up your system with the 3700+ and 6800GT, that is a pretty good match up. I assume you have already clocked your 6800GT to Ultra levels (or tried to?). That could be good for a solid shot of performance if you haven't.

Will you really be bottlenecking a 7900GS? Probably depends on the game. No one is debating that a 3700+ is a solid CPU, but I know when I moved from my S939 3700+ @ 2.65 ghz to my e6400 many games had very improved minimum FPS (like Company of Heroes), so even there a bottleneck was evident. That probably also depends on resolution, I was looking at 1440*900.

That's just my opinion. I would save the $100 difference between your GT and whatever you want to buy right now and put that towards your card this summer/fall/whenever you make the jump, it'll make it just that much sweeter.

I gots the cool idea. Hehe. ;)

Buy a real powerful card when the R600 comes out then get a K10 quad core when they come out.

I also have a Socket 754 clawhammer 3700+. I bought a PCI Express motherboard on newegg, and put a 7600 GTS in my system, and got another gig of ram. I am very happy with the performance I got when I jumped from the 5900xt, and 512 MB setup to this new setup.

Most games I play in 1024x768 with 4x AA and 16x AF. I do get quite a bit of lag in City of Villains but I think that's just the game itself. I may even buy me a 8800 640 MB and a new monitor towards sometime this summer, and upgrade my CPU, etc some other time.

Look into the EpoX Socket 754 board on newegg that has SLI. I have the Albatron board that was out for a while. I paid only $25.00 for it after mail in rebates. Boy, am I glad I bought it.

Game Ive played with no lag with this rig
Quake 2 * of course* 4x AA 16x AF
Q3 Urban Terror *of course* 4x AA 16x AF
CSS in 1024x768 4x AA 16x AF
BF2 in 1024x768 4x AA 16x AF
Doom 3 1024x768 4x AA 16x AF
F.E.A.R 1024x768 4x AA 16x AF
SilkRoad Online 1024x768 4x AA 16x AF
WoW 1024x768 4x AA 16x AF

A 7800GS just doesn't seem like enough of an upgrade from what you have. It has 16Pipelines just like your 6800GT does, but just with higher clock speeds.

I'd look into the 7900GS or x1950 as your upgrade routes. :)
