Simple questions for a simple home network

sorry for the newbie question. i've tried searching for the answer, but everything i got was way over my head. i don't know very much about networking, and neither does my roommate. anyway:

if my roommate and i each have a NIC in our computers, can we just run CAT5 between our two computers and have a network? are there changes in win2k that need to be made, etc? if my pc has a net connection, will his pc automatically see it (i think i know this one, i have to enable net sharing in 2k)? or should we get a hub/switch/router (or use his old P233 as server) for the soon to arrive ADSL/cable connection?
TIA

It's regular Cat5 cable, with pins 1&2 on one end going to pins 3&6 on the other (and vice-versa). Keep the polarity the same (pin 1 to pin 3, pin 2 to pin 6).

The pins count left-to-right, with the clip facing away from you.

You can also buy a pigtail that will do the swap for you, then just use a straight-through cable.

Good Luck.

If you guys are going to try to share a network connection fo r the internet, I would say that your lead on buying a router with built in switch would be best. With the one device, you can get your netowrk together as well as share your connection. I used the lynksis at work, and it was very easy to set up. Aside from the physical installation of the NICs, it took about two minutes for each comp... Good luck.
