simple questions about ide cables

i am going to plug in a promise ata100 ide controller card into my computer. this is the first time i am handling ata100 stuff.

1. i see that the ide cables are marked ata66. does it mean they cant do 100?
2. one end of the ide cable is blue while the other is black... does it matter which is connected to the card and which to the drive?
3. should i start by connecting a drive to the end of the cable first, or to the middle of the cable first?

oh one more thing... if i am going to put 2 drives on the ide controller card should i put them on different channels, or the same channel?

thanks!

The ribbon cable must have the blue connected to the motherboard or controller card. Run drives through seperate channels and ensure your bios are set to auto detect for all primary and secondary controllers. If you are connecting only one drive to one controller use it end to end. The middle is where you would slave (connect) another drive. udma/66/100, I think handle the same ribbon cable.

hmm.. thanx!

what about my last question?

It's best to put the drives on seperate channels if possible. That way each drive can have the full bandwidth of the channel it is connected to. Slaving one of the drives would force the two drives to share the same channel bandwidth, leaving the second channel completely empty.
