Are fans on CPU heat sinks supposed to pull the air into the heatsink or, suck the heat out? !

The reason i ask is because my CPU is running at 86 degree's Celcius, and i'm afraid it's going to burn out, i've put Arctic silver on my AMD 64 too, any suggestions?

Whoa, 86C is very hot, too hot. Shut it down immediately! Make sure you reinstalled the hsf correctly after appyling as5. Most hs/fs suck air I think(edit I mean suck the air into the heatsink), but the difference is not that big, and which way works better depends on your system. I think the most likely problem is a botched hs/f installation. Make sure the hsf is contacting the cpu right. Take it off, reappy as5 to the cpu, install the hs/f, take it off and check if there is as5 on the heatsink. Put just a small layer of as5, not too much, enough to spread to a thin layer. And what mobo and monitoring program are you using?

Sorry for being unclear, I mean suck the air into the heatsink. :)

Also, are you sure it's celsius? 86F=30C, which is a little low but could be possible if you are idling and have cool room and case temps.

I'm using Arctic silver 3 at the moment, but umm... i'm using an Abit kv8 Max 3, i swear i've done it 3 times now, i'm checking to see if the temp is too high again. Being very meticulous about it too. Don't know what is going on.

kv8? touch ur heatsink if you can keep your hand on it for a few secs it shouldnt be running too hot..
maybe update to the current bios.. the mobo is prolly reading temps wrong

The problem is i am building a new computer so i can't really update many things, but i touched the heatsink when it was going and it wasn't too hot. It could be reading it wrong.
