Simple question will going from i7 7700k to the next intel processors require a new mobo ?

The i9's that are coming out soon will definitely use a different motherboard than the 7700k. Not sure if they will end up releasing an i9 for the mainstream chipsets. Have seen no rumors about it. It is really hard to make sense of anything Intel does, especially now that they are possibly releasing a 4C4T i7 for the high end desktop line.

What about the new 6 core/12 threads i7s ?

Some rumors say Z270 may work (depends on board, manufacturer). Others say it will require a new socket = new mobo.

There is no official confirmation yet from Intel.

Intel traditionally screws users over when it comes to compatibility.

I wouldn't get too hopeful.

Ryzen may change their stance on that. After all, if you need to buy a new motherboard in the first place why not just go with AMD? But if you can buy a drop in replacement...

If they can. It can be the case that some forward thinking is needed - so they might be too far down the track to adjust for - even if they are just producing another Skylake stepping.

For a processor that's launching in a matter of 2-3 months? The pin layout of Coffee Lake must have been finalized months ago. It would be practically impossible at this stage to make socket changes to their design.

This is why it will be a new socket, its already been established what socket they will use, it has to have been decided months ago. And if it was going to be on Z170/270 mobos why not announce that and make people happy? The fact that they are silent about it means its a new socket and they just dont want to piss people off any earlier than they have to.
