well, I got my opteron 146 in, and when I took out the plastic over from the bottom of the stock heat sink I accidently scratched off(more like a line/groove on a corner) some of the thermal adhesive puddy with my nail. So now I'm paranoid that if I use it, it will be uneven on the processor, or that blank spot where the groove is will not have contact and heat dissipation for that spot....

So..should I just go ahead and wipe off all the thermal puddy from the surface and apply some new stuff? Yeah I'm a noob... I've always just built comps with the stock heatsinks+fan in the past...actually my 486's and pentium 1's didn't even have a fan i don't think.... just had that really tough adhesive.. anyways...OR.. should I just wipe it off and just put some AS5 on the top of the processor and slap the HS on and call it a day?

If you already have some AS5, then go ahead and use that. But I wouldn't worry about the using paste. It gets smahed down to an extremely thin layer anyways, so it will be fine.

might as well to just wipe it all off and use AS5, peace of mind and lower temps.

not necessari;y lower temps!
For every one person who claims to get lower temps with AS5 there are 2 or 3 who post that they saw no dramatic improvement in temps.
