i went to my friends house today to set up her computer with a wirless router. well i get there, and the machine that she is currently connected into the cable modem with runs windows 98, and it has a usb cable from the modem into the back of the pc. my question basically is, all i have to get for her is a NIC and about 3 feet of cable and then just completely unplug the usb cable from the modem to get it to work right? i wanted to get some opinons because- A. i hate windows 98, and B. ive never used the usb option on my cable when a cat5 works fine. thanks

That's about the short of it. You'll need to uninstall the USB Cable Modem software, install the Ethernet NIC, and configure the new NIC for TCP/IP. Depending on if the wireless router comes with DHCP Server functionality, you'll either need to manually setup static IP addresses on the Win98 box or just set everything up for automatic DHCP address configuration.

Most cable modems will automatically detect if you're using the USB port or Ethernet port, so no configuration of it should be required.
