Simple program to record videos through Windows

I am looking for a simple free program to be able to record videos of gameplay and post them on youtube.

I would like to be able to open them with WMP. I have tried a few others but they were in a different file format and could not see them without downloading something else.

I have tried hypercam, Smartpixel, Guncam. It seems that fraps is the best one but don't want to pay for that.

I've used https://obsproject.com/ before to record some gameplay vids of Elite Dangerous. It works pretty good once you get it setup correctly. Since its really a broadcasting program it's defaulted to a low bitrate low resolution recording. Once you tweek a few of those settings it works and since its free you're not out a lot if you don't like it.

I'll 2nd the obsproject suggestion. You may have to do a little searching to get everything the way you want it and works well for your system. It's a great free open source program.

I have tried OBS and so far, it is doing the job I want.

Maybe this is not an issue with OBS but when I upload the video to youtube, the quality is worse than the actual file itself. The file on my pc is much clearer than the youtube version. I assume the quality lessens each time it is uploaded. Is there a way to keep the initial quality?

Ty for the suggestions.

What bitrate are you recording at? Are you recording in HD or SD?
I'm afraid I might not be much help. I've never uploaded a vid to youtube before so I'm not sure what their policy is or if they have an option to keep quality of the original video.

EDIT:OBS does have a help forum as well. It might be worth it to ask there and see if anyone can help. https://obsproject.com/forum/
