Soldering copper is no big deal. If you've done electronics you can do plumbing.

Buy some steel wool or sandpaper to clean the pipe and fitting (they also make a tool for this if you want to buy that) Do not skip this step, you'll be sitting there for an hour trying to solder it if you don't have a clean pipe and fitting. Just polish the outside of the pipe and inside of the fitting until it shines

After they are clean, apply flux to both. assemble and apply heat. Put the heat where you want the solder to go, so heat the fitting not the pipe. Try to move the torch around the fitting to apply heat evenly. After 10-20 secs touch the solder to the joint. If it's at the right temp the solder will instantly melt and be sucked into the joint. Add solder all the way around the joint. You don't need much so don't go crazy and add 5" of solder wire to it.

If you are having trouble with water in the line
a. stuff some white bread into the pipe. No crust. Then take off the aerator off the faucet and blast it out when you are finished.
b. try to boil water out with the torch.

Looks like it's all done now.

There was already a 1/2" threaded connector soldered to the pipe. Unscrewed the old plastic junk, put on new metal washerless supply valves, and braided stainless steel hoses screw-on hoses. It all seems to be doing just fine now. Thank you, everyone. :)
