Simple personal schedule program?

I'm just looking for a program where I can put reminders about things on dates, so something with a full calendar...

and I would want this program to pop up reminders at times I can specify about those events... like, pop up a thing on my desktop or down in the tray or what have you, to remind me of something.

And, ideally this program could also do an alarm/notification at even short spans away like 50 minutes or whatever.

I have no idea what programs like this are called. I've just gotten done searching around and can't seem to find anything. There must be something like this.

Any ideas?

Do you have a copy of outlook on your computer? If so you could use that. You could look at thunderbird which I believe is free and see what that offers. May need to sync an email account but you can tie that with your phone.

As for standalone programs nothing comes to mind.

Well, since I don't have that much in my to-do list, I use the Calendar app in Metro UI for W8. Simple and quite good. But Google calendar was a total disaster - I really didn't like the interface.
