I think i've got an infection on my big toe...called to make an apointment with my doctor since it's been around for a week and a half and nothing ive done seems to pacify it.....when speaking to the receptionist she told me that until i see my doctor i should soak my foot in epsom salt..(Mr. Miyagi's secret remedy) same thing my boss suggested since it worked for him. I read the box and it says to discontinue use if there is an infection.....so i asked the pharmasist(at longs) and he suggested antibiotic cream....which is what i have been using. Basically should i soak or not?

I've been plagued with toe infections for years. Not so much anymore due to four surgeries. The epsom salt will help as long as the infection isn't a result of a broken, jagged nail cutting into the side of your toe. In my case, no medicines helped. If that's the case for you, you'll probably need surgery to correct it. Prepare yourself for horrible pain, as the novocaine doesn't take well to big-time infected areas. The doctor digs and cuts the nail near the edge, all the way down below the cuticle to kill it at the root. He'll then rip if off, and it makes a very meaty sound in the process. It hurts like an absolute mofo, but it's worth it afterwards, especially if it's a chronic problem for you.

Cheers!

Oh noes ! I think that's what it might be :( Chronic? Not really, this is the first time it's been this bad, the nail grows down once in a while but i've always just cut it regularly and it's not hurt like this.

I'd soak it twice a day in epsom salt in hot water. Does it discharge fluid no matter how much you keep it clean and maintain it? Another thing to do is cut your toe nails straight across, do not follow the angle of your toes. Personally I use a dremel lol, my nails tend to chip if I use standard clippers. You can also try cutting a "V" shaped notch in the center to relieve pressure at the sides.

I had the same problem a while back, and it was reccommended that I soak with epsom salts. It didn't seem to help at all however, because my toenail was ingrown. I would reccommend just waiting until you see your doctor. They cut my toenail down the middle a couple of times, but it would still grow back the same, painful way. It wasn't until they really dug in and numbed up my toe and injected some sort of "poison" to kill that side of the toenail that it got better. It didn't really hurt all that badly, but I guess it depends on your tolerance for pain. The most painful part was when they stuck needles in my toe to make it numb, and like it was said in an above post, the sound. Afterwards it felt pretty good, but bled a lot. Definitely felt better than having a toenail jammed into it! Now my toe/toenail looks perfectly normal, so even if you don't have a high tolerance for pain, in the long run it'll be better. Just don't smack your toe into anything in the meantime! :D
