My sister has an iPad and some sort of data plan with very few mins.
When she Is at my house she can tether to my router.
Does doing this automatically stop the data plan from accruing mins?

I don't know how to tell if it is automatically switched over. Where are the settings?

Settings -> WiFi

text is pretty self explanatory.

As long as she has logged into your wireless network once, it will constantly log back into that wifi network when it is in range.

Right, but does this also turn off the other connection so they dont count the mins?

Right. Well, data then.

Okay, so let's try this a different way.

If the ipad has 3g on the top left corner, it's burning data. If it's a radar like symbol, it's on wifi and not burning data.

Ah! THAT is what I needed to know.

Most modern smart devices (iOS, Android, WinPho, etc) will connect automatically to known wireless networks and seamlessly switch over to them for data usage. As NS1 said, you can tell by the indicator in the upper corner.

What's annoying is when it tries to use a WiFi connection that has no connectivity to the Internet, it doesn't automatically go back to 3G, or indicate that the WiFi connection is useless (I'd like a red indicator or something).

Thats because it assumes the wifi is set up properly. You cant fault the device if the wifi is not set up properly and has no internet. You expect to much from apple.

It would be a reasonable complaint if say Android devices did do what he was asking. I don't know if they do or not.

he does have a point. win 7 will flash a warning.

iOS doesn't and as far as i can tell neither does android. it's a PITA sometimes

This could be a problem, if for example you are, as my sister is, on a rather limited data plan. You believe you are connected to the wireless router, but you lose connection and it jumps over to data usage with out much of a warning.

on ICS at least, the data indicator will be gray instead of blue if there is no internet connectivity, i think.

Then yea, some sort of indication would be nice, or if you try to open a webpage and it doesn't work, have it pop up and ask if you want to switch to the cell connection.
