Ok here's the setup that I had that was working and I'll explain why it isn't now down below.
Gateway computer: Two nics....one cable to the cable modem and the other cable going to the 5 port ethernet hub. From the hub I have another cable that runs down the wall to downstairs and connect the pc that I'm trying to share the internet with. Both pc's are running windows xp professional.
This setup worked fine until recently I had to reinstall windows on the client pc (the one downstairs) and when I went to jump on the internet downstairs, it wouldnt work. So I opened up the networking panel and low and behold it says a cables disconnected. I checked everything...nothing is disconnected. So I run upstairs and the HOST computer says no cables are disconnected?!
so my first question was how can one computer detect a disconnected cable while the other one runs fine and dandy? the only solution i could come up with is that the cable running from the hub to the client computer is faulty. Anyone have any other ideas? By the way after tinkering around a while I got the connection to work for about five minutes but then a ! symbol appeared in the system icon tray saying something about static IP.
Anyone know whats goin on?
