Simple HDD Question

I usually back HDD using Ghost on win2k. The back up drive has not been functioning (software Wise). Could it be there is a virus on that drive as I usually alternat to be certain that the drive is functioning. Since it had started to lock up, I formatted and will copy again. Will this eliminate the possible virus and irregulatities or must I FDIK.
