Simple HD Capacity Question

I should know this, but I need verification. I haven't bought a harddrive in about 5 years when I last bought my maxtor 20gig. So I forget how much you actually get vs how much the box says you get (kinda like buying a 2x4 where its actually 1.5x3.5).

So I got a 200 gig HD and I partitioned it into a 50 gig and a 150 gig. The capacity of my 50 gig is only 46.8 gigs and my 150 gig is only 139 gigs. So this adds up to 185.8 gigs. Is this right? Would I have squeaked more out of it if I had not partitioned it?

Okay.. I think I am thinking of two different things. the 1000/1024 issue is the one I was mainly thinking of.

I got it now.. thanks guys.. its abouta 7% loss total so I am right perfect.

I will say.. I went from a 20 gig ata66 2mb drive tot his ata100 8mb drive and I cannot believe how much faster this sucker is.

WHOA thanks for the article. That clears it up big time and my 185.8 gigs is only .5gigs off on my calcs with the article so I am right where I should be.
