Simple (dumb?) question regarding resolutions

Take the HP LP3065, for instance. Its native resolution is 2560 x 1600. It does not scale down. It's basically that or nothing, right?

Now the main question I have is, say a game has resolution choices up to 1920 x 1200. Could I play said game at that resolution or am I SOL due to the monitor not "supporting" it?

I am going to keep the 2560 x 1600 resolution for all non-gaming applications, but for in-game, what choices do I have?

Forgive the dumb question here, I just have no idea. TIA.

Who told you that you cannot scale down on a 30'' 25x16 monitor? Of course you can..
Of course you will not have the same IQ when rendered at a lower than optimal resolution, it might look a bit blurrier or not that clear but you can definitely do it..

There are other issues that you should take into account though, because you might need it for other things besides gaming.. Those monitors don't have component/composite/d-sub outputs only DVI. This means that you cannot connect other devices in it and even if you can through DVI, you will not be able to reproduce 1080 p / i. That's useful for consoles or watching a blue ray film on your screen.. You are limited to 720p. That's why I went with the smaller 27'' 1920x1200 Dell 2707wfp,because I needed a big enough monitor for everything in my room.
BenQ is said that it will release a 30 incher 2560x1600 with full component outputs until the end of this year. Now this will be a killer monitor. ;) 30'' 25x16 monitor that you can practically throw anything at it..
But if your only concern is for pc use and gaming then you will not have any issues.

Ok, maybe I was just being dense/paranoid, but glad you put my fears to rest. I have a Mitsubishi WD-65831, 65" 1080p TV, so not too worried about the rest of it, but many thanks for the heads-up, esp for others that may be considering this.

Just wanted to make sure of the original questions.

Getting my 30" at the end of the month, as well as a couple of 20" portrait monitors to flank it :)

That's nice to hear.. I just mentioned it, because I'm lazy and I need a big monitor for everything in my playroom.. Don't wanna mess with my living room :p
Go ahead then no problem at all ;)

HP 3065LP comes equipped 3 DVI-D connectors. And I thought DVI > Component?

Well the digital signal theoretically is always better and comes with no losses. The fact is that you cannot reproduce a 1080 interlaced or progressive signal through DVI in these 30''..Neither you can connect a composite or a d-sub source as well..
