I seem to be seeing a lot of 'dsl modems' around. These are either pci or usb in interface. I want a piece of hardware like my cable modem, ethernet based.

I want to be able to take the phone line, plug it into a device, plug an ethernet cable into that same device, and then plug the other end of the same ethernet cable into my hub. From the hub I would then like to plug two cables into it, one going to each pc.

Do they sell dsl modems that are ethernet based? If so, could someone recomend one to me? Also, is there any way I can bypass the whole hub, and just plug the phone line into a device, and then two cables into that device, one going to each pc?

Thanks for the help in advance.

Yeah I can get the ICS to work with a pci or a usb device. What I really want though is the ethernet modem.. I guess I'll have to dig...

Also, I was reading somewhere that you can just hook up a router and use that for everything. Is that possible? Can you just pop the phone line (rj11) into the uplink of the router and then plug in your ethernet cables to the other ports?

I've got a White external Westell ADSL modem from Verizon with my DSL service. It has worked fine ever since I bought it, and it's ethernet based. Model: B90-36R515-01

You might want to check that one out.
You didn't specify what dsl service you have (sdsl, adsl) , so if you have ADSL it should work just fine. JUST DONT GET VERIZON DSL! :)

Just went through the same thing here. No-one was willing to sell me an external (ethernet) cable modem. At least, until I looked here. (Note that I *think* this is what I bought -- description sounds the same, but the piece I received looks different).

I bought a 3com Homeconnect Dual something-or-other ADSL modem. Seems to work fine, but documentation sucked (nonexistent) and tech support sucked worse. This is a DSL modem that has an ethernet port and a USB port on the LAN side of it -- the idea is that you can connect 2 PC's to it (one on each port). Unfortunately, even with the help of tech support we couldn't get the Windows-based install to work on my laptop with either USB or ethernet. Ended up doing a fresh install of Win98 on a spare PC in order to get everything to work. :Q

After digging around, though, it seems like all of that is unnecessary. You can plug a computer directly into the device from the ethernet port (set your PC to use DHCP as the device has a built-in DHCP server) and address the device via web browser (scan the network to find the device or guess -- the address of mine was either 192.168.157.100 or 192.168.157.1). All you need to do is tell the modem what your VCI and VPI settings are and you should be good to go.

Once everything was set on the modem I plugged it in to a SMC Barricade Firewall/Router ($49 after rebate) and was good to go. Note that I use PPPoE to connect to my provider -- don't know for sure what other protocols this device supports. Check the specs but I think this modem is going to need another device to drive it (ie it won't log in with your username/password itself and it doesn't come with PPPoE software for you to run on a PC).
