Simple cell phone question

I've always wondered how this works. Say you're on the phone with someone, and they hang up. Shortly thereafter, your phone will say Call Ended or something to that effect. How does it know that the call was ended? I'm just curious as to where the signaling originates from.

The tower. The tower sends a signal to the phone telling it that the call was terminated.

Okay, I assumed as much.

Basically, the phone network monitors for the presence of a connection? That would make sense. But I am wondering about the nuts and bolts. For example, should a caller mute the call, no sound is being transmitted, yet the line is kept open.

Cell phones send digital informatin. So even when nothing is being said, a signal is being sent. Not to mention, background noise is always being sent.
