Simple app to share files in my house

Hi. I've spent hours trying to troubleshoot crappy windows file sharing, and I can't get my house PCs to see each other. I give up. I've tried setting an FTP up in the past but it's been aggravating as well with my router and firewalls.

Is there an easy app I can use to transfer files between peers that will take advantage of the high internal bandwith? I don't want to have to use AIM file transfer because it tends to be slow even internally, so if anyone has a better idea I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Windows explorer, tools, folder options, view, uncheck use simple file sharing.

Click start then run and type in \\pc name and hit enter.

Enter in that PC's user name and password or administrator and the admin password.

Transfer files.

Also I've run into issues with Windows Firewall blocking connections so I'd suggest turning it off on both PC's if you're still having issues.

Is the windows firewall screwing with your file sharing settings? Any third party firewalls?

I'm talking about gigs worth of files.

No, disabled all firewalls, still can't get the machines to see each other, so unfortunately lokiju's suggestions (which I've also tried) don't work.

finch, would you like to come over and fix it for me then?

EDIT: Fantastic, I've got a whole group of people willing to help.

I know what I'm doing. I've double checked settings five times, and I said I give up. If not helping me and quoting someone who makes a feeble insult makes you feel worthwhile, then go ahead.

Are you running XP Home or Pro on your computers?

Some XP, some Vista. I think the Vista box may be part of the problem, since I eventually got them to see each other pre-upgrade.

Can you ping the other machines?

Yeah, they can both ping each other. Both are set to the same workgroup, both have file sharing enabled (tried both simple and non-simple). Shouldn't be much more complicated than that, no?

Do you have any other firewall application besides Windows Firewall?

Yeah, they've been disabled/closed as well.

Tried doing the explorer \\ to no avail using the IP as well, now that i know it's IP. Very weird.

Check Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services just to be sure they have been disabled.

disable windows firewall
disable "simple sharing"
try to map drive using \\ipaddress\C$ as a path (and use appropriate passwords, if your PCs are not in a domain just type username and password) if that doesn't work something is seriously wrong with your pcs

edit: i think you gotta have admin privileges to map to entire partition

Looks like I can finally get it. Don't know what exactly did it this time, but it worked. Thanks for the help!
