ohh I guess I didn't refresh the page...Thanks! Wish I had more but no other ubuntu rigs at the moment and all that vmware stuff has been wiped out from a year or two ago with reinstalls.

Added another 4 CPUs to the mix...

That takes me down to six working on WCG and Malaria Control, respectively... hopefully we tag out 1M in time to easily cut to the PrimeGrid Challenge :)

That's ok wayliff, we know there's very few linux users on the TeAm. :)

So wondering if we should do recruiting at the CPU and GPU forums for a 1M or 10M goal on this project?

It seemed to go rather well.

Thoughts?

This project only has ~200 WUs at any given time, it might not survive a blitz :D

yeah that sounds like it could be a problem. That and the upload\download server is disabled now. Maybe it is too early for a bigger CPU army.

I have VM player running Windows Server 2008 R2 (I'm learning for taking the exam test and have a 120 day version to use). How many VMs can VM player host?
(also I need 25 posts to get into FS/T)

I've installed Linux OS's before but I don't know where to put the Boinc file in the tree and what to use to unpack the program in the tree. Also I don't remember which files are execuitable, so I would like to learn if u will help. Tell me what Linux version to download and desktop type I usually don't pick gnome the other (????) has more bells and games loaded up.

Many :) *But you can only have so many VMs up at the same time as you have memory to support, VMware Player statically reserves the memory allocated to a VM.

So, if you have 4GB of Ram, you could give 1GB to R2 (enough, usually) 1GB to your Ubuntu Cruncher (my VM is using ~600MB right now) and you probably always want to keep 1+ GB available for your host OS.

Don't be afraid to share CPUs, that actually works really well. If you have hyperthreading, though, I would likely only give the VM as many "cpus" as you have actual cores, that should give you great crunching performance while ensuring there is still room in the CPU scheduler for all of the other things you want to do.

If you grab the Ubuntu (either release, really, but I do have soft spot for LTS (long term support) and I like its menu system better) ISO file, it is a cake walk to install with Player.

As for the install, http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC_on_Ubuntu - specifically:

sudo aptitude install boinc-client boinc-manager

That worked great for me earlier today :)

Base install, one command (I did all the updates too), add the project, and you're off! Probably 30-45 minutes of stuff going on, 10 minutes of interaction depending on how long it takes to get the ISO and for the install to complete. The default 20GB of space is plenty.

OK. I got Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit running and I have downloaded Boinc 64 bit for linux. Now I don't know where to put the file in the tree structure and I'm posting now while I snoop around for the file manager. And if I need to make a directory I need that information also.
Thanks,
Stitch
I've got 8 gigs so memory is not a problem supposedly though my base Windows 7 is loading up 2 gig almost for itself.

I've installed root in the command line. I use to get around on basic time sharing at one time and I go back in the beginning of the DOS era so I sorta familar with the command line interface but some specifics are very foreign. like yum?

If you downloaded the shell script from this link using firefox: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download_all.php

then the file is probably in your home/Downloads directory. I would open up this directory and then highlight the file with one mouse click and then right-click hold and choose copy. The go up one level to your home directory and choose paste. Make sure you've downloaded the 6.10.38 version of boinc. The next step is to open up a terminal (applications/accessories/terminal).

In the terminal type: sh ./boinc_6.10.58_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh

then type: cd BOINC

then type: ./run_manager

What do I need it appears I'm missing stuff.

bruce@ubuntu:~$ sudo sh boinc_6.12.34_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.sh
use /home/bruce/BOINC/run_manager to start BOINC
bruce@ubuntu:~$ cd BOINC

It would be best to download 6.10.58 and run that version. The only advantage of the version you downloaded is you get annoying notifications from WCG and PrimeGrid from time to time. I can walk you through the process of identifying libraries you are missing but that will take time and significant effort.

I'll try and find 6.10.58
can I del the Boinc directory to start fresh? or how do I do it?
Stitch

No need to delete the BOINC directory. Just download 6.10.58 from the link I posted above. It's listed as the older version for 64-bit Linux. Just move it into your home directory, run the shell script and it will overwrite the other version's files.

It takes a while to download all the files to run the WUs (slow server).

Hopefully it will go ok. I'm off to bed ;)

I'm in System Monitor and under Processes I can't find Boinc running. I've looked in System Monitor File Systems and can't find a relationship either.

I've tried I think all executable files and all I get is a flash of a Terminal Window.

Any Ideas?

Also how should I sign up as a team member and do that in the program and where is the web site?

at a terminal window:

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo aptitude install boinc-client boinc-manager

now BOINC Manager should show up as a system tool :)

Add the project and rock out!

It does take a bit to DL all the project files, they are only a few MB but usually downloads are in the single digits KB wise.

GL :)
